What is KNX IP?

KNX IP (KNXnet/IP) is the IP layer of the KNX building-automation standard. Instead of carrying telegrams only over a twisted-pair (TP) bus, it tunnels and routes them over the building's existing Ethernet network.

In practice, KNX IP routers couple individual TP lines into one logical installation over IP. This gives large buildings a high-speed backbone, removes TP cable-length limits between floors, and opens secure remote access for commissioning, diagnostics and visualisation servers.

Why choose KNX IP for larger buildings

On a multi-floor building or campus, a pure TP topology becomes slow and hard to service. KNX IP solves this by moving line-to-line traffic onto Gigabit Ethernet, so a press in one wing reaches an actuator in another without bus bottlenecks.

KNX IP cabinet cost and lead time

A KNX IP control cabinet is quoted per project, because the price depends on the number of TP lines, the IP routers and the field load. As a guide, a residential KNX electrical distribution cabinet with an IP backbone typically starts around €3,000–8,000; multi-line commercial cabinets are quoted individually.

Standard production and dispatch is 10 to 15 working days from a confirmed order and approved design. Every cabinet is CE-marked, built to EN IEC 61439 and delivered ready for a local electrician to connect the incoming and outgoing cables.

What is KNX IP and how is it different from KNX TP?

KNX IP (KNXnet/IP) carries KNX telegrams over Ethernet, while KNX TP uses a dedicated twisted-pair bus. KNX IP is used as a fast backbone to couple TP lines, enable remote access and connect visualisation — the room-level wiring usually stays on TP.

Do I need KNX IP Secure?

For any installation reachable from the internet, yes. KNX IP Secure encrypts and authenticates IP telegrams so remote commissioning and access cannot be intercepted or spoofed. We enable it by default on cabinets with remote access.

How much does a KNX IP control cabinet cost?
