What is DALI-2?

The professional standard for addressable lighting

DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) is the IEC 62386 standard for lighting control. Unlike 0–10V dimming or PWM, DALI provides two-way communication: the controller sends commands and receives status back from each individual luminaire driver.

DALI-2 (2014 revision) adds multi-master operation, standardised input devices, energy metering (DT18), and mandatory third-party certification. All new projects should use DALI-2 certified equipment.

In our panels, DALI-2 gateways sit on the KNX bus. Each DALI group address maps to a KNX group object — the building automation system controls lighting without knowing anything about the underlying DALI topology.

DALI-2 capabilities

Why professionals choose DALI-2

💡

Individual luminaire addressing

Each DALI ECG has its own address (0–63 per line). Dim, switch, read power consumption — per fixture, no separate wiring.

🔀

Multi-master architecture

DALI-2 allows multiple bus masters simultaneously — KNX gateway + application controller + emergency lighting controller on one bus.

📊

Energy monitoring per luminaire

DALI-2 Device Type 18 (DT18) provides real-time power, energy and hours data for each ECG — fed directly into KNX group addresses.

🔆

Scene and group control

16 scenes × 16 groups per line. Any combination of luminaires can be in a scene — programmed and recalled over DALI without re-wiring.

🚨

DALI emergency lighting

DALI-2 Device Type 1 (DT1) enables centralised testing, monitoring and reporting of emergency luminaires per EN 62034.

🔗

KNX integration

DALI-2 multi-master gateways map DALI groups to KNX group addresses — one object per luminaire or group, full ETS6 integration.

FAQ

DALI-2 questions

What is DALI-2 and how is it different from DALI?

DALI (IEC 62386 part 1) is the original standard for addressable lighting. DALI-2 extends it with multi-master support, standardised application controllers (e.g. for input devices), device type 18 (energy metering) and mandatory backward-compatibility certification. In practice: DALI-2 allows multiple bus controllers and standardised two-way communication.

How many luminaires can a DALI-2 line support?

One DALI line supports up to 64 ECGs (electronic control gear) and 64 input devices. In our panels we typically use 4-line gateways, giving 256 individually addressable ECGs per panel. For larger installations, multiple gateways are installed.

Can DALI work without KNX?

Yes — DALI is an independent lighting bus. However, for building automation integration (scenes triggered by occupancy, blind positions, time schedules) we always pair DALI with KNX. The DALI gateway translates KNX group addresses to DALI commands.

What is DALI emergency lighting (DT1)?

DALI Device Type 1 allows centralised monitoring and automated testing of emergency luminaires. The gateway polls each emergency fitting, logs test results and can raise alarms in the KNX system or SCADA. Required by EN 62034 for commercial buildings.

Can I dim LED drivers with DALI-2?

Yes. DALI-2 Device Type 8 (DT8) supports colour control (RGBW, Tunable White) and Device Type 6 supports LED drivers. However, the LED driver must be DALI-2 certified — check the driver datasheet for 'DALI-2 IEC 62386-207' compliance.
