Where we use Modbus
Energy metering
MID-approved Modbus meters (Eastron, Schneider iEM, ABB B-Series) for ISO 50001 energy monitoring. Per-circuit or per-department.
HVAC integration
Communicate with Daikin, Mitsubishi, Mitsubishi Electric VRF systems via Modbus RTU gateway. Temperature setpoints, mode, status.
SCADA connectivity
Modbus TCP gateway exposes KNX panel data to SCADA/BMS systems. Standard protocol, no custom integration needed.
Generator / UPS monitoring
Read status and alarms from gensets and UPS systems over Modbus RTU. Integrate into KNX notifications.

Modbus FAQ
What is the difference between Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP?
Modbus RTU uses RS-485 serial (2-wire), typically for field devices like energy meters, sensors and drives. Modbus TCP is the same protocol over Ethernet/IP — used for longer distances, higher speed and integration with IT systems. In our panels we install RS-485 to TCP gateways when needed, allowing SCADA systems to reach RS-485 devices over Ethernet.
Can Modbus energy meters be read by KNX?
Yes. A KNX-Modbus gateway (e.g. MDT Modbus Gateway, Weinzierl KNX Modbus) reads Modbus registers and maps them to KNX group addresses. Energy values are then available in ETS, visualisation systems and cloud dashboards.
How many Modbus devices can one RS-485 segment support?
Up to 247 slave devices per RS-485 segment. In practice, 30–50 devices per segment is typical for reliability. For larger installations, multiple RS-485 segments with separate Modbus master ports are used.
