ABB
One of three founding companies of the KNX standard — 30 years of i-Bus KNX.
ABB (Asea Brown Boveri), headquartered in Zürich, Switzerland, is one of the three companies that founded the EIB/KNX standard in 1990 alongside Siemens and Philips (now Signify). Their i-Bus KNX range is among the most comprehensive in the market — from single-channel actuators to 32-channel DIN-rail modules, from binary inputs to logic controllers and IP interfaces. In commercial and industrial building automation across Europe, ABB i-Bus KNX is a dominant choice.

How we use ABB
ABB's SA/S switching actuator series is one of the most flexible in the KNX market. From SA/S2.6.1 (2× 6A) to SA/S32.16.1 (32× 16A), the range scales from small apartments to large commercial floors without changing the programming methodology. ABB's S200 miniature circuit breaker series is the international reference for circuit protection — certified to IEC 60947 and widely used in European distribution panels. We frequently combine ABB protection devices with ABB KNX actuators for consistency when ABB is the client's preferred brand.
ABB i-Bus KNX provides both the protection layer (S200 breakers, F200 RCDs) and the automation layer (SA/S actuators, JAL/S blind actuators, DM/S dimmers, BCI/U binary inputs) in projects where ABB is specified. The ABB IPR/S KNX IP Router offers comparable functionality to MDT's equivalent. For projects requiring ABB cableway, busbar systems and KNX in a unified BOM, ABB simplifies procurement significantly.

ABB FAQ
Why is ABB significant in the KNX world?
ABB was one of the three founding companies of the EIB (European Installation Bus) standard that later became KNX. They have over 30 years of KNX development history. ABB's i-Bus KNX line was among the first certified KNX products on the market. This heritage means ABB KNX products are deeply integrated with ETS and the KNX ecosystem.
How does ABB SA/S compare to Hager TXS or MDT AKD actuators?
All three are KNX certified switching actuators with similar ETS functionality. The main differences are form factor, current measurement features (MDT AKD has integrated measurement; ABB SA/S has it on some models), and price. ABB tends to be priced between MDT and Gira — more expensive than Hager, similar to MDT. We select based on project scope and client preference.
Can ABB S200 breakers be used with Hager KNX actuators?
Yes, absolutely. Circuit protection (breakers, RCDs) is entirely independent from the KNX automation layer. ABB S200 breakers simply provide overcurrent protection — they have no communication with the KNX bus. The KNX actuators downstream are any brand you choose.
Do you stock ABB KNX components for fast delivery?
We stock commonly used ABB SA/S switching and JAL/S blind actuators in our workshop. Larger orders or less common variants are sourced from our European distributors with 3–5 day lead time. For urgent projects, we can expedite from ABB Germany stock.
