How we use ASSA ABLOY
Aperio wireless lock platform: Aperio is ASSA ABLOY's battery-powered wireless lock cylinder platform operating on 2.4 GHz Zigbee/proprietary mesh. Aperio cylinders (Aperio E100 for standard Euro profile cylinders, Aperio P100 for mortise locks) fit standard European lock formats and communicate wirelessly to an Aperio hub (RS-485 or TCP/IP connected to access controller). The Aperio hub provides a dry contact output per door — normally open, closes on door open — which is wired to KNX binary input modules (ABB M2184.1, MDT BE-0800.01) for door status integration. KNX group address: GA 5/floor/door_number DPT 1.002 door_open = 1 → ETS6 triggers: alert notification, corridor light ON, HVAC zone switches to occupied mode. Battery life: up to 3 years on CR123A depending on access frequency. HID OSDP readers: ASSA ABLOY's HID brand manufactures OSDP (Open Supervised Device Protocol, v2.1.9 IEC 60839-11-5) readers — the modern replacement for Wiegand 26-bit. OSDP readers (HID RP40, Signo 20/40 series) communicate with the access controller over RS-485 at up to 115,200 baud with AES-128 encrypted bidirectional communication — unlike Wiegand (one-direction, unsupervised). KNX-PMS integration: VingCard Visionline server (PMS middleware) triggers check-in/check-out events → KNX group address commands via middleware. CLIQ remote key management: for high-security mechanical/electronic hybrid locks in infrastructure, data centres, and critical facilities: Abloy CLIQ system uses electronic key cylinders with a digital audit log — who opened which lock at what time. Abloy Protec2 Cliq smart padlock
Electronic/mechanical hybrid padlock combining Abloy disc detainer mechanical security (highest pick/drill resistance) with CLIQ electronic authentication. Electronic key contains a digital certificate — lock only opens if key's certificate is valid for that lock at that time. Audit log: every opening recorded in key memory (up to 100 events), downloaded to CLIQ management software via key programming station. KNX integration via CLIQ controller dry contact output: padlock open event → KNX binary input → DPT 1.002 alarm → relay output → alert, ventilation, CCTV trigger. How does ASSA ABLOY Aperio integrate with KNX — is there a native KNX module?
No native KNX module exists for Aperio. Integration is via hardwired dry contact: the Aperio hub (which receives wireless status from Aperio cylinders) provides one dry contact relay output per door. This normally-open (NO) contact closes when the door is opened. Connect the NO contact to a KNX binary input module (ABB M2184.1 or MDT BE-0800.01) using a 2-core 0.5mm² cable. ETS6 programs the binary input: on contact closed (door open) → send DPT 1.002 = 1 (alarm) to KNX group address → trigger corridor light, alert notification, occupancy mode. This dry-contact approach is universal — works with any access control brand that provides relay outputs, not just ASSA ABLOY.
What is the difference between Wiegand and OSDP card readers for KNX integration?
Both integrate with KNX via the access controller's relay output — the reader type (Wiegand vs OSDP) doesn't change how KNX receives door status. The difference is in security and diagnostics: Wiegand 26-bit is one-directional (reader to controller only), unencrypted, and unsupervised (controller cannot detect if reader is removed or tampered). OSDP v2 (IEC 60839-11-5) is bidirectional, AES-128 encrypted, and supervised (controller detects reader tamper and cable cut within 1 second). For building automation integration, this doesn't matter — KNX receives the same dry contact signal regardless. For security auditing, OSDP provides superior access log integrity and tamper detection that can be surfaced via KNX alarm group addresses.
Can VingCard hotel room locks be integrated with KNX without a PMS system?
Yes — partial integration is possible without PMS. The VingCard room lock card switch contact (closes when guest card is inserted in the holder near the door) can be wired directly to a KNX binary input. This provides presence/absence detection for HVAC and lighting control without any PMS connection or VingCard server involvement. The card switch is a simple mechanical contact — it doesn't communicate with the VingCard system at all. PMS integration (check-in triggering KNX welcome scene, check-out triggering eco mode) requires the VingCard Visionline server and a middleware gateway. For basic hotel room automation, card switch + KNX binary input is sufficient and eliminates PMS integration complexity.
