Europe's Leading KNX Presence Detectors — Native KNX TP Sensors Without Gateways
BEG Luxomat (Brück Electronic GmbH, Markt Erlbach, Bavaria, founded 1985) is Europe's most widely specified manufacturer of KNX presence and motion detectors, daylight sensors, and constant-light controllers. BEG sensors are native KNX TP devices — programmed directly in ETS6 without any additional gateway, bridge, or relay module. With over 50 KNX sensor models covering ceiling-mount, wall-mount, outdoor, and design variants, BEG provides the broadest KNX sensor portfolio of any European manufacturer, making it the default sensor brand for KNX integrators across Germany, UK, Netherlands, and Scandinavia.

How we use BEG Luxomat
PD9-KNX series: the PD9-KNX-DX is BEG's most popular ceiling-mounted presence detector. PIR passive infrared detection (360° horizontal, 10m diameter at 2.5m mounting height) with integrated daylight measurement (photocell, 1-1000 lux range). Native KNX TP BCU (bus coupling unit) built into the sensor housing — no external module needed. ETS6 application: download from KNX Product Database (KNX.org) or directly from beg-luxomat.com. KNX objects: movement detection (1-bit DPT 1.002), absence detection (1-bit DPT 1.002, delayed), daylight value (2-byte float DPT 9.001, lux), constant-light setpoint output (2-byte float, for DALI/1-10V dimmer), orientation light (1-bit, dim to 10% when room empty but occupied building). The PD9-KNX-DX dimensions are identical to a standard 100mm ceiling luminaire knockout — can be installed flush in a suspended ceiling tile without tools. PD4-KNX corridor sensor: designed for corridors and stairwells where ceiling height reaches 3-5m. PIR detection: 120° horizontal, 1.0m wide × 12m long detection field at 3m mounting height — optimised for linear corridor detection rather than area coverage. Dual-action output: movement detection 1-bit AND a separate reduced-level output (1-bit) — corridor lighting steps from 10% orientation to 100% occupied level on detection, back to 10% on absence (without full off, maintaining egress illumination). ETS6 programming: standard 4-step corridor logic programmed natively in the PD4-KNX ETS6 application, without additional ETS6 logic blocks — reduces commissioning time significantly. LC-Click-KNX constant-light controller: for installations requiring constant illuminance (office EN 12464-1: 500 lux working plane), the LC-Click-KNX adds a separate KNX constant-light controller to any DALI or 1-10V luminaire circuit. The LC-Click clips to the DALI line inside the luminaire junction box, measures actual lux from a remote photocell, and sends DALI or KNX output signals to maintain target illuminance regardless of daylight contribution. LC-Click eliminates the need for KNX HVAC constant-light setpoint logic in ETS6 — the function runs locally within the LC-Click device, sending only trimmed DALI level commands. KNX group address output: actual measured lux (DPT 9.001) for BMS energy monitoring, and a 'setpoint reached' flag (DPT 1.001) for fault alarm if daylight gain cannot maintain setpoint (window obstructed, sensor dirty). Outdoor and weatherproof sensors: BEG PD2-KNX: IP44 wall-mounted PIR for outdoor security lighting (140° horizontal, 12m range at 2m mounting height), KNX TP connection via watertight cable gland, -25°C to +55°C operating temperature. Suitable for villa gate pillars, building facade soffit mounting. ETS6 application: same pattern as indoor PD9-KNX but with outdoor-specific time delay options (10-60 minutes holdoff). PD2-KNX + DALI outdoor LED driver (e.g., Tridonic CLE 60W Compact): KNX PIR event → DALI ON command via KNX actuator → outdoor flood at 100% for 5 minutes, then dim to 30% orientation if building still occupied (ETS6 timer logic), full OFF at 30min absence.
All BEG sensors are native KNX TP devices, programmed in ETS6. Movement detection (DPT 1.002), absence detection, daylight value (DPT 9.001), and constant-light trim output (DPT 5.001) all communicate directly on KNX bus without bridges. BEG sensors integrate with any KNX actuator brand via group addresses — no vendor lock-in. Typical wiring: 2-wire YCYM KNX cable from panel bus bar to ceiling junction box, then short stub to sensor BCU terminal.

PD9-KNX-DX ceiling presence detector
360° PIR coverage, 10m detection diameter at 2.5m mounting height (78m² per sensor). Integrated photocell (1-1000 lux). Native KNX TP BCU built in — no external module. KNX objects: movement (DPT 1.002), absence (DPT 1.002), lux value (DPT 9.001), constant-light trim output, orientation light. 100mm diameter — installs flush in standard suspended ceiling tile. ETS6 application from KNX.org or beg-luxomat.com.
PD4-KNX-DX corridor linear sensor
120° horizontal, 1.0m wide × 12m long detection field at 3m mounting height — optimised for linear corridors and stairwells. Dual-action output: 100% on movement detection, separate 10% orientation output on absence. 4-step corridor dim logic built into ETS6 application — no additional ETS6 logic blocks needed. Specified for hospital corridors, hotel corridors, and stairwells requiring continuous egress illumination.
PD9-KNX-FLAT slim ceiling sensor
Ultra-slim flush ceiling tile sensor for architectural interiors where sensor visibility must be minimised. Same KNX TP BCU and ETS6 application as PD9-KNX-DX. 360° PIR, integrated lux measurement. Specified for high-end commercial offices, hotel lobbies, and design-sensitive reception areas where standard sensor protrusion is unacceptable.
PD2-KNX outdoor PIR sensor
IP44 wall-mounted outdoor PIR. 140° horizontal, 12m range at 2m mounting height. KNX TP connection via watertight cable gland. Operating temperature -25°C to +55°C. ETS6 application with outdoor-specific hold-off options (10-60 minutes). For villa gate pillars, building facade, and covered walkways. LC-Click-KNX constant-light DALI controller
Clips to DALI line inside luminaire junction box. Remote photocell measures actual lux on working plane. Maintains target illuminance (EN 12464-1: 500 lux) by trimming DALI level regardless of daylight contribution — function runs locally, no ETS6 logic blocks required. KNX output: actual lux (DPT 9.001) for BMS energy monitoring, setpoint-reached flag (DPT 1.001) for fault alarm (window obstructed, sensor dirty). Eliminates constant-light logic from ETS6 application.
BEG Luxomat FAQ
Do BEG presence detectors work with DALI and 1-10V dimmers as well as KNX?
Yes. BEG manufactures three parallel product lines: KNX TP models (native BCU, ETS6 programming), DALI-2 models (standard DALI application controller, programmed via DALI commissioning tool), and standalone/1-10V analogue models (no bus, direct relay and 1-10V output). The KNX TP models are the most flexible — they send KNX group addresses that any KNX dimmer (KNX DALI gateway, KNX 1-10V actuator, KNX switch actuator) can receive. For projects mixing DALI ceiling luminaires with KNX control: use the BEG PD9-KNX-DX (KNX TP sensor) → KNX DALI gateway (Tridonic MSI, MDT DALI, Helvar Router) → DALI luminaires. The BEG DALI-2 models are used when commissioning tool (not ETS6) is preferred or when direct DALI scene integration is needed.
What is the recommended mounting height for the BEG PD9-KNX-DX?
The PD9-KNX-DX is specified for 2.0-4.0m ceiling mounting height. At 2.5m (standard suspended ceiling): detection diameter = 10m, covering approximately 78m² per sensor — suitable for one open-plan office bay (approx. 6m × 8m). At 4.0m (atrium or double-height space): detection diameter = 8m (PIR sensitivity reduces at greater distances), covering 50m² — space sensors at 7m centres. For heights above 4m (warehouse, sports hall): specify the BEG PD9-KNX-SLIM (30m detection at 12m mounting height, narrower beam angle, KNX TP). Minimum mounting height: 2.0m to avoid false triggers from ceiling fan airflow or warm surface convection.
Can BEG sensors send absence detection separately from movement detection?
Yes — all BEG KNX models have separate KNX communication objects for movement detection and absence detection. Movement detection (object 1): sends 1 (DPT 1.002 'alarm') immediately when PIR detects movement. Absence detection (object 2): sends 1 (DPT 1.002) after the configured hold-off time (default 10 minutes, adjustable 30 seconds to 60 minutes in ETS6 parameters) with no further movement detected. This allows independent ETS6 logic: movement → DALI lights to 100%, absence (after 10min) → DALI lights to 10% orientation, second absence event after 30min → DALI lights off AND KNX thermostat to economy setpoint. Using separate objects avoids the need for ETS6 timer logic blocks — the sensor handles the timeout internally.
