Canadian audiophile multi-room streaming — Bluesound Node 2i for KNX projects where Sonos quality is insufficient.
Bluesound (Stouffville, Ontario, Canada — founded 2012, a subsidiary of Lenbrook Group, parent of NAD Electronics) manufactures Hi-Fi grade multi-room audio streaming components under the BluOS platform. While Sonos dominates the mainstream KNX audio market, Bluesound is specified in premium residential projects where audio quality matters: MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) decoding, 192kHz/24-bit hi-res streaming, audiophile-grade DAC in the Node 2i, and tight integration with NAD amplifiers. The BluOS platform (the software ecosystem) now supports over 2,000,000 installations across Bluesound, NAD and PSB brands. For KNX integration, Bluesound uses its local BluOS API — accessible via Home Assistant for scene triggers, volume control and source selection.

How we use Bluesound
Bluesound integrates with KNX via the same Home Assistant bridge architecture as Sonos: BluOS devices are discovered on the local network via UPnP/mDNS → HA BluOS integration controls playback, volume and grouping → KNX group address telegrams trigger HA automations → BluOS API calls. The key differentiator from Sonos is audio quality: Bluesound Node 2i contains an ESS Sabre ES9028Q2M DAC (audiophile grade), supports MQA, Tidal Masters, hi-res FLAC, and pairs directly with NAD amplifiers via their Modular Design Construction (MDC) system. In practice, for listening room, home cinema and premium bedroom audio in KNX projects, Bluesound Node 2i + NAD amplifier + passive in-wall speakers delivers noticeably superior sound to Sonos Era. For kitchen, bathroom and casual listening zones, Sonos remains the practical standard.
In PanelCraft panels, Bluesound integration is software-only — no dedicated panel hardware. Standard design: Bluesound Node 2i or Powernode draws standard 230V from a switched socket on a KNX relay output (for remote power control). The Node 2i Ethernet connection goes to the local network switch. Home Assistant discovers BluOS devices and bridges to KNX: KNX scene telegram ('Listening Room ON') → HA → BluOS play 'Tidal Masters — Jazz Classics' at 40% volume. Bidirectional: BluOS now-playing track → HA → KNX string group address (DPT 16.001) → Gira X1 room display shows current track. Zone grouping: KNX 'Party' scene → HA → BluOS group all zones for whole-home audio.

Bluesound Node (2023)
Pure network streaming source — no amplification. HDMI ARC, optical, coaxial, and analog outputs. Pairs with any external amplifier (NAD, Rotel, Marantz). ESS Sabre DAC, MQA, hi-res 192kHz/24-bit. For KNX projects: specify Node when the client has or wants a separates amplifier system (audiophile listening room). KNX relay on/off → 12V trigger to amp → clean signal path.
Bluesound Powernode
All-in-one streamer with integrated 2× 80W Class D amplifier. Drives passive speakers directly — no external amp needed. HDMI ARC. For KNX zones where passive in-ceiling speakers are installed and a separate amp is not justified (spare bedrooms, guest rooms, study). Replaces Sonos Amp with superior audio quality.
Bluesound Pulse Flex 2i
Compact wireless BluOS speaker (similar to Sonos Era 100). Wi-Fi streaming, Bluetooth. For zones where passive speaker installation is not practical. Lower volume max than Sonos but superior DAC quality for near-field listening (desktop, bedside).
Bluesound Vault 2i
CD ripper and hard-drive music server (2TB internal). Rips client's CD collection to FLAC, stores locally, streams to all BluOS zones. For clients with large CD libraries who want local, cloud-independent music. KNX 'Departure' scene → HA → Vault stop playback.
Bluesound FAQ
Should I specify Bluesound or Sonos for a KNX project?
Sonos for 90% of KNX projects: excellent quality for casual listening, simple commissioning, huge ecosystem, widely understood by clients. Bluesound when: the client is an audiophile (owns reference-grade amplifiers, listening room), the project has passive speakers requiring NAD or Rotel amplification, the client streams Tidal Masters or hi-res FLAC and will appreciate the difference, or budget allows NAD MDC-based separates. In practice: specify Sonos for kitchen/bathroom/casual zones, Bluesound Node for the listening room — both controlled from the same KNX group addresses via HA.
Does Bluesound BluOS work locally without cloud?
Yes — BluOS local network operation works without internet for playback from local library (NAS, Vault), Bluetooth, and AirPlay 2. Streaming services (Tidal, Spotify, Qobuz) require internet. The BluOS local HTTP API is accessible on the LAN without cloud account — Home Assistant uses this for KNX integration. Response time: ~150ms for local API calls, similar to Sonos.
Can Bluesound group with Sonos zones?
No — Bluesound BluOS and Sonos are separate, incompatible ecosystems that cannot group together. However, in a KNX project via Home Assistant, you can synchronise them: KNX 'Party' scene → HA automation triggers Sonos grouping on all Sonos zones AND Bluesound grouping on all BluOS zones simultaneously. They won't be sample-accurate synchronised, but for background party music the ±1 second offset is imperceptible.
