How we use Dimplex

Electric panel heater KNX relay control is the simplest form of KNX heating integration: a DIN-rail relay actuator (MDT BJ65-AB08.01 8-channel relay, 16A per channel, or Gira 1034 4-channel relay) in the distribution board switches the 230V supply to each heater independently. ETS6 assigns each relay channel a KNX group address (DPT 1.001). KNX room thermostats (MDT SCN-RT3U.01) send heating demand telegrams that the KNX logic processes — closing the relay when the room temperature is below setpoint. No additional gateway, Modbus interface, or vendor-specific protocol is required. Dimplex ASHP models (7kW, 9kW, 14kW) include an SG Ready (Smart Grid Ready) interface — two dry-contact input terminals (S1, S2) that accept external signals for grid-aware operation. KNX integration: MDT BJ65-AB08.01 relay actuator channels close S1/S2 contacts based on KNX telegrams from the energy management system. When the PV system detects surplus generation (Fronius Symo → SMA EnergyMeter → Home Assistant → KNX), KNX sends telegram closing S1 (raised setpoint +3°C) or closing both S1+S2 (maximum heating mode for PV surplus absorption). Dimplex Quantum storage heaters use economy 7 night tariff electricity for overnight thermal storage, discharged as room heating through the day. KNX integration enables scheduled charging override — the KNX weekly time channel can signal Quantum charge control via relay input, allowing smart tariff optimisation beyond fixed economy 7 times. This is particularly useful in buildings with half-hourly smart meters and dynamic tariffs where the cheapest charging window varies nightly. Electric underfloor heating (UFH) mats (Dimplex UFH-150, 150W/m2) use 230V thermostats for standard control. KNX integration replaces the standalone thermostat with a KNX thermostat actuator (e.g. Theben RAMSES 812 top2 KNX) that reads floor and room temperature sensors and drives a relay actuator channel for the UFH mat. Floor temperature limiting (typically 27°C max for comfort, 35°C max for damage prevention) is implemented in ETS6 logic using the floor sensor feedback.

Dimplex electric heating products integrate with KNX via standard relay actuators — MDT BJ65-AB08.01 or Gira 1034/1035 relay modules. Each heating zone (room) uses one relay channel: KNX closing the relay contact energises the heater. No Modbus or proprietary gateway required — ideal for retrofit projects where KNX cable is already installed. Dimplex ASHP models with SG Ready input accept two dry-contact relay channels from KNX for PV surplus control.

What KNX relay actuator is needed to control Dimplex electric heaters?

The MDT BJ65-AB08.01 (8-channel relay, 16A per channel, 230V AC) is the standard choice — one relay channel per heater zone. For smaller installations, the Gira 1034 (4-channel) or Hager TXA208B (8-channel) are alternatives. Each channel switches the 230V supply to one Dimplex heater. ETS6 parameterisation: relay type = switching output, DPT 1.001, group address per zone. Relay actuator is mounted in the DIN-rail distribution board alongside the KNX power supply and line coupler.

How does Dimplex ASHP SG Ready connect to KNX?

Dimplex ASHP SG Ready interface has two dry-contact input terminals (S1, S2). Wire two channels of a KNX relay actuator (MDT BJ65-AB08.01) to S1 and S2 terminals on the ASHP. KNX logic: when PV surplus is detected (e.g. via Fronius Symo Modbus TCP → KNX gateway → energy management GA), KNX sends telegram closing S1 (raised setpoint +3°C for moderate surplus) or closing both S1 and S2 (maximum heating mode for high surplus). When surplus ends, KNX opens both relay contacts — ASHP returns to normal scheduled operation.

Can Dimplex electric heaters be controlled remotely via KNX?

Yes — KNX relay actuator control means the heater is fully remote-controllable from any KNX visualisation: MDT IP Interface + ETS6 remote, Gira HomeServer, Home Assistant KNX integration, or a KNX-capable app (YOUVI, Jung VisuControl). The KNX relay actuator's group address is the control point — any KNX telegram writing 1 (ON) or 0 (OFF) to that address switches the heater. For holiday homes, remote activation 2 hours before arrival is a common use case: KNX time channel or HA automation triggers preheat mode.
