DoorBird (Bird Home Automation GmbH, Berlin, Germany — founded 2013) manufactures premium IP video intercoms designed for smart home integration. Their aluminium housings, wide-angle cameras and open REST API have made DoorBird the go-to video doorbell for Home Assistant integrators and high-end residential projects. Available in flush-mount and surface-mount versions for single-family homes and apartment entry.

How we use DoorBird
DoorBird intercoms connect via Ethernet (PoE) or Wi-Fi and use the SIP protocol for audio/video calls to phones, tablets, SIP phones and indoor stations. The open REST API allows any smart home platform to receive doorbell events, trigger relays, query camera images, and manage access logs. The native Home Assistant integration provides real-time doorbell events, live camera feed, and door release service calls without cloud dependency.
In our panels, DoorBird integrates with KNX via Home Assistant as the middleware: DoorBird REST API event (doorbell press) → HA automation → KNX group address telegram (e.g. binary 1 = 'someone at door') → KNX room controllers display notification, lights flash, heating raises setpoint. Door release: KNX scene 'open door' → HA automation → DoorBird REST API relay command. No dedicated KNX module exists for DoorBird; all integration is software-based via HA.

Surface-mounted single-family video intercom. 1080p camera with IR night vision, 180° wide-angle lens. SIP, REST API, RTSP stream. Wi-Fi + LAN. Weather-resistant (IP65). Most common DoorBird model for residential.
DoorBird D2101FV
Flush-mounted video intercom for single-family homes. Brushed stainless or black aluminium. Requires 64mm standard flush box. Same feature set as D1101V but premium flush appearance.
DoorBird D2102FV
2-button flush video intercom. Two door release outputs — for main door and gate, or for two apartments. Popular for detached homes with separate garage gate and front door.
DoorBird D101S Indoor Station
Indoor IP station with 7" touchscreen. Displays live video from DoorBird camera. Door release button. SIP extension. Alternative to answering on phone — mounts at entry hallway or kitchen.
DoorBird A1101 Access Controller
Compact RFID reader + keypad for DoorBird systems. 125kHz and 13.56MHz RFID, PIN entry, Wiegand output. Mounts separately from intercom — for gate or garage access without video.

How does DoorBird integrate with KNX?
Via Home Assistant (recommended): the HA DoorBird integration uses the local REST API for events and commands. When the doorbell is pressed, HA fires an event; an automation then sends a KNX service call to any group address. Reverse: a KNX scene can trigger an HA script that calls the DoorBird relay API to release the door. No native KNX module exists — HA is the bridge.
Can I view DoorBird camera on a KNX room controller?
Most KNX room controllers don't have a video display. Video is typically answered on: the DoorBird app (push notification), a tablet running HA Lovelace (DoorBird camera card), the D101S indoor station, or a SIP phone. On KNX touchscreens like Gira X1 or Jung KNX touchpanel: possible if the panel supports RTSP streams.
Does DoorBird work without internet or cloud?
Yes — the REST API and RTSP stream are fully local (LAN only) without any cloud dependency. App access outside the home requires either port forwarding, VPN, or DoorBird's optional relay server. Home Assistant integration uses the local API by default — no cloud required.
DoorBird vs 2N for KNX projects — which to choose?
Choose 2N IP Verso when: native KNX module without HA is needed, RFID access control is required, vandal resistance is important, or image quality is critical (2N 5MP vs DoorBird 1080p). Choose DoorBird when: HA is already the integration hub, aesthetics in a residential setting are the priority, the project budget is lower, or Wi-Fi installation avoids Ethernet cable routing.
