Z-Wave Smart Home with HC3 KNX Integration for Retrofit Automation

Fibaro (Poznan, Poland) is the leading Z-Wave smart home brand in Central and Eastern Europe. The Fibaro Home Center 3 (HC3), Yubii Home, and individual Z-Wave modules (Dimmer 2, Double Switch 2, RGBW Controller 2) are popular for KNX-adjacent retrofit projects where wireless control is needed alongside hard-wired KNX infrastructure.

Role in our panels

How we use Fibaro

Fibaro HC3 KNX integration: The Fibaro Home Center 3 supports KNX via the built-in Virtual Device (LUA scripting) and the 'Fibaro Connect KNX' plugin (Fibaro Marketplace). Fibaro HC3 acts as a KNX IP tunnel client — connects to KNX/IP router on the KNX network. Configuration: HC3 > Plugins > Fibaro Connect KNX > add KNX/IP router IP + port 3671. Z-Wave to KNX bridge: Fibaro Dimmer 2 (FGD-212, 250W universal Z-Wave dimmer) dim level maps to KNX DPT 5.001 via HC3 LUA. Fibaro Double Switch 2 maps to KNX switching. Fibaro Motion Sensor (FGMS-001) motion + lux maps to KNX presence DPT 1.001 and lux DPT 9.004. Fibaro Flood Sensor maps to KNX alarm DPT 1.005. Typical retrofit scenario: existing KNX HVAC in office building, add Fibaro Z-Wave sensors in meeting rooms (no cabling required), sensors report to HC3, HC3 sends KNX telegrams for HVAC setback when room vacant. Fibaro Walli series (EU flush-mount): Walli Dimmer, Walli Switch, Walli Controller in standard 55mm EU frames — Z-Wave 700 chip, S2 security. Installed parallel to existing KNX wiring without coupling. HC3 aggregates. Fibaro FGBS-222 (Smart Implant): dry-contact input and 0-10V/12V output, 2 DS18B20 temperature inputs — retrofit into existing analogue/dry-contact devices. Connect DS18B20 output to HC3, re-emit as KNX temperature object. Fibaro HomeKit and Google Home: Yubii Home hub adds Matter support (Matter-to-Z-Wave bridge), Matter-over-Thread. For KNX-pure environments, HC3 KNX plugin remains the primary integration path.

Fibaro HC3 connects to KNX IP networks via the Fibaro Connect KNX plugin, bridging Z-Wave wireless sensors and dimmers to KNX group addresses — enabling wireless retrofits in buildings with hard-wired KNX infrastructure.

Key components we install

FIBARO-HC3Z-Wave controller

Home Center 3

Z-Wave Plus 700 series controller, supports up to 230 Z-Wave devices. KNX integration via Fibaro Connect KNX plugin: acts as KNX IP tunnel client, maps Z-Wave device states to KNX DPT group addresses. LUA scripting engine for complex bidirectional automation.

FIBARO-FGD-212Z-Wave dimmer

Dimmer 2 (FGD-212)

250W universal Z-Wave in-wall dimmer (EU). Works with leading/trailing edge for LED, CFL, incandescent. Sends dim level to HC3 — mapped to KNX DPT 5.001. 2-wire no neutral installation possible.

FIBARO-FGMS-001Z-Wave motion + lux sensor

Motion Sensor (FGMS-001)

Z-Wave PIR motion, lux (1-32000 lx), temperature, and vibration sensor. Battery 3.6V Li-SOCl2. Motion maps to KNX DPT 1.001 via HC3. Lux maps to KNX DPT 9.004 for blind automation. 3-year battery life.

FIBARO-FGBS-222Z-Wave universal module

Smart Implant (FGBS-222)

Z-Wave module with 2x digital inputs (dry contact), 2x open-drain outputs, 2x DS18B20 temperature inputs, 0-10V analogue input. Retrofit existing devices into Fibaro/KNX network. Compact DIN rail mountable.

Fibaro FAQ

Does Fibaro HC3 connect natively to KNX?

Yes, via the Fibaro Connect KNX plugin (available in Fibaro Marketplace). HC3 acts as a KNX IP tunnel client and connects to a KNX/IP router (e.g. MDT IP Interface, Weinzierl KNX IP Router) on the local network. KNX group addresses are mapped to Z-Wave device states via the plugin configuration or LUA scripts.
