Gewiss

Italian KNX Manufacturer — Chorus Range Actuators, Switches and DALI Gateway

Gewiss (Cenate Sotto, Bergamo, founded 1970) is Italy's largest electrical installation manufacturer. The Chorus KNX range covers switch actuators, dimmer actuators, blind actuators, push-button interfaces, DALI gateways, and IP routers — all ETS6 certified and KNX Association members. Standard in Italian residential and commercial KNX projects, competing with Bticino/Legrand in the Italian market.

How we use Gewiss

The Gewiss Chorus KNX range provides a complete Italian-market KNX device set: GW14801 (2-channel 16A switch actuator), GW14802 (4-channel 16A switch actuator), GW14810 (8-channel 16A switch actuator, DIN-rail), GW10815 (4-gang push-button interface with LED), GW14840 (4-channel LED dimmer actuator, leading/trailing edge), GW14820 (2-channel blind actuator with positioning and slat angle), GW14853 (DALI-2 gateway 64 devices, ETS6 plug-in), and GW90609 (KNX IP router for KNXnet/IP routing). All Chorus KNX devices use the standard KNX TP (Twisted Pair) bus and are programmed via ETS6. The GW14802 4-channel switch actuator ETS6 parameters: each output independently configurable as switch (on/off), timer (staircase or on-delay), scene recall (up to 64 scenes), or logic gate (AND/OR). Manual override buttons on the DIN-rail module allow local operation without KNX bus power. Bus voltage recovery behaviour (channel state on KNX power restored): configurable per channel as off, on, or restore last value. Short-circuit and overload protection integrated — load current per channel up to 16A (resistive), 6A (inductive/fluorescent). Suitable for lighting circuits, socket circuits, and small motor loads. The GW10815 4-gang push-button interface supports the Italian electrical installation standard: 45×45mm module format (Gewiss 503E back box, 3-module DIN flush box). Four independent push-button inputs, each with configurable action table: single press, long press, and double press each assignable to different KNX group addresses (DPT 1.001 on/off, DPT 5.001 dim value, DPT 18.001 scene recall). Per-button LED indicator with configurable colour (red/green) and feedback source (KNX GA, local input status, or scene active). Compatible with all Gewiss Chorus mechanical frames (45×45mm format) in white, ivory, titanium, and graphite finishes. The GW14853 DALI-2 gateway supports 64 DALI-2 short addresses (individual devices) or 16 DALI groups on one DALI bus (two-wire, 16V DC, max 300mA). ETS6 plug-in workflow: initiate DALI bus scan from ETS6, assign short addresses to physical devices in sequence, create DALI groups (up to 16 groups of up to 64 devices), program scene levels (DALI scenes 0–15 stored in DALI drivers for autonomous recall). KNX group objects per DALI group: on/off (DPT 1.001), dim value (DPT 5.001), colour temperature for DT8 devices (DPT 5.001 Tc), and absolute dim level (DPT 5.001). Scene recall from KNX uses DPT 18.001 scene GA — the DALI driver stores the scene level and executes fade without further KNX telegrams.

Full Italian KNX manufacturer — switch, dimmer, blind actuators and push-buttons in ETS6, plus DALI-2 gateway for luminaire control. Italian 503E frame compatibility for aesthetic integration with Gewiss Chorus switches throughout the installation.

Gewiss FAQ

Are Gewiss Chorus frames compatible with Bticino back boxes?

No — Gewiss Chorus uses the Gewiss 503E format (45×45mm module), which is compatible with Gewiss back boxes (flush, surface, weatherproof series). It is not directly interchangeable with Bticino Matix format (44×44mm) or Livinglight format. In Italian electrical installation practice, the choice of frame brand is made at the project specification stage and all modules throughout the installation use the same back box format. PanelCraft specifies Gewiss Chorus frame format at project start to avoid mixed-format compatibility issues during installation.

Does Gewiss support ETS6 or only ETS5?

All current Gewiss Chorus KNX range products support ETS6 (version 6.0 and above) with up-to-date product databases available from the Gewiss website and ETS Online Catalog. ETS5 .vd5 files are also provided for legacy project compatibility when the KNX engineer is using ETS5. For new projects, PanelCraft uses ETS6 exclusively — ETS6 offers improved group address management, commissioning tools, and the ETS6 IP interface for remote commissioning without a dedicated programming interface.

Gewiss vs MDT for switch actuators — when to choose which?

MDT (Germany) offers an extensive KNX actuator range widely used across Europe, with strong technical documentation and a large installer base outside Italy. Gewiss Chorus is the preferred choice in Italy for two reasons: frame aesthetic consistency (same brand from back box to switch frame throughout the installation) and local distributor availability through Italian electrical wholesalers. MDT actuators offer more advanced ETS6 parameters and more product variants (e.g. MDT AKU-1616.02 with 16 channels). For Italian projects, PanelCraft defaults to Gewiss Chorus for switches and push-buttons to match Italian aesthetic; may use MDT for specialised actuators (large channel count, high current) where Gewiss equivalent is not available.
