How we use GVS

The GVS K-BUS product range covers the complete KNX installation from field devices to backbone infrastructure: 4-button push-button interface (KNX TP, LED indicators per button, Italian 503E format), 8-channel relay actuator 16A (DIN-rail, ETS6, manual override), 4-channel dimmer actuator (trailing edge for LED, leading edge for conventional, ETS6), 2-channel blind actuator (position and slat angle control, ETS6), DALI-2 gateway (64 devices, ETS6 plug-in), and KNX IP router (KNXnet/IP routing and tunnelling, 150 telegrams/s). All devices use the standard KNX TP bus and are programmed via ETS6. GVS scene controller (up to 64 scenes, DIN-rail) provides standalone scene management without requiring a separate KNX logic controller. The GVS K.ONE design frames are the distinguishing aesthetic feature of the product line. K.ONE frames use Italian 503E back box format (45×45mm module) with three frame material options: glass (glossy white, glossy black, smoked grey), aluminium (anodised natural, champagne gold), and ABS (white, ivory, anthracite). Frame gang configurations: single (1 module), dual (2 modules), and triple (3 modules) gang, accommodating combinations of KNX push-buttons, switches, sockets, and data outlets on the same frame. The uniform frame system allows an entire residential or hospitality interior to use a consistent switch aesthetic from entrance to bedroom without aesthetic adapters or mixed-brand frames. The GVS DALI-2 gateway ETS6 plug-in workflow provides full DALI bus management from within ETS6. Initial commissioning: initiate DALI bus scan from the ETS6 plug-in, which assigns short addresses (0–63) to physical DALI devices in the order they respond during scan. Group assignment: drag DALI short addresses into DALI groups (0–15) via the ETS6 plug-in interface. Scene programming: set level (0–254) and, for DT8 devices, colour temperature (Tc, 1000K–20000K DALI scale) per scene per group or per device. The plug-in writes scene data to DALI driver NVM (non-volatile memory) during commissioning — scenes are stored in the driver and execute autonomously on DALI recall command. EN 50172 emergency lighting schedule: the GVS DALI-2 gateway supports DALI Part 202 (emergency lighting devices) with automatic test cycle scheduling and inhibit control via KNX GA for emergency lighting compliance. GVS positions in the market between Gewiss (Italian, similar price) and MDT/Gira (German/Austrian, higher price). For Italian residential and commercial projects, GVS offers competitive pricing versus Gewiss with K.ONE frame aesthetics often preferred for hospitality design specifications. For East European export markets, GVS provides Italian design aesthetics at a price accessible to the local market. GVS IP router is used in multi-line KNX installations as the IP backbone component regardless of which brand of field devices is used — the IP router is interoperable with all KNX brands by definition of KNXnet/IP standard.

GVS vs Gewiss for Italian KNX projects — which to choose?

Both GVS and Gewiss are Italian KNX manufacturers with similar product ranges (push-buttons, switch actuators, dimmer actuators, blind actuators, DALI gateways, IP routers) and similar pricing. The key difference is specialisation: GVS manufactures exclusively KNX and building automation products (deeper product specialisation, more KNX-specific features); Gewiss also manufactures conventional electrical products including distribution boards, cable management, and industrial switchgear (broader catalogue, single-brand supply for the whole electrical installation). For a project where the specification covers only KNX automation, GVS and Gewiss are equivalent choices — decide based on local distributor availability and frame design preference. For projects where one brand is specified for the entire electrical installation (distribution boards, conduit, and KNX), Gewiss may have an advantage as a single-brand supply.

Does the GVS DALI gateway support DT8 tunable white?

Yes — the GVS DALI-2 gateway supports DALI Part 207 DT8 Tc mode for colour temperature control of tunable white luminaires. In the ETS6 plug-in, set the DALI device type to DT8 for individual short addresses or groups containing DT8 luminaires. The ETS6 plug-in then exposes a colour temperature KNX group object (DPT 5.001 mapped to DALI Tc range 1000–20000 mirek, corresponding to 6500K–500K). Scene programming for DT8 devices: set both level (0–254) and Tc value in the ETS6 plug-in scene table — both parameters are stored in the DALI driver NVM and recalled autonomously on scene command. Note: all luminaires in a DT8 group must be DT8 capable; mixing DT6 and DT8 devices in the same DALI group causes colour temperature commands to be ignored by DT6 devices (level commands work for both types).

Are GVS products available outside Italy?

Yes — GVS exports to East Europe (Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia), Middle East (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar), and selected Western European markets. Local distributor availability varies by country; check gvs.it > Distributors section for the current authorised distributor list in your country. For PanelCraft projects in the Baltic states and Eastern Europe, GVS products can be sourced via the Polish or Czech distributor with 2–4 week lead time for standard products. For urgent requirements, MDT or Gewiss equivalents with local stock may be more practical. GVS K.ONE frames are the primary reason for specifying GVS over locally-stocked alternatives — the frame aesthetic is difficult to replicate with other brands.
