Hikvision

China's largest IP camera brand — cost-effective CCTV for KNX smart buildings with ONVIF alarm integration.

Hikvision (Hangzhou, China — founded 2001) is the world's largest manufacturer of IP cameras and video surveillance equipment by market share, with over 40% of the global professional CCTV market. In Europe, Hikvision cameras are ubiquitous in commercial, industrial and residential CCTV installations — not as a premium choice, but as the cost-effective, feature-rich standard. In KNX projects, Hikvision cameras integrate via their ONVIF alarm output: motion detection, AcuSense person/vehicle detection, and IDS (intrusion detection) events → HTTP notification → Home Assistant → KNX group address trigger. Hikvision also offers a native REST API (ISAPI) for direct HTTP command-response integration without HA. Note: Hikvision has faced US Federal procurement restrictions (NDAA) — verify project requirements for government or US-contracted buildings.

Role in our panels

How we use Hikvision

Hikvision integrates with KNX via two paths: (1) Alarm trigger via HTTP: Hikvision cameras support 'Event' → 'Linkage Method' → 'HTTP Notification' — sends a POST request to a HA webhook URL when motion/person/vehicle/intrusion is detected. HA automation receives webhook → sends KNX telegram (binary 1 on group address 3/0/X = camera alarm zone X). (2) ISAPI (Hikvision HTTP API): direct REST API access — poll alarm status, get live stream URL, get snapshot, configure recording. HA's Hikvision integration uses ISAPI for real-time alarm events and camera state. Hikvision NVR (DS-7600/9600 series) also supports centrally-triggered motion alarms and sends HTTP notifications from the NVR level, reducing per-camera configuration.

In KNX panels, Hikvision integration is software-only via HA — no dedicated panel hardware required. Panel design considerations: (1) PoE switch with 802.3at (PoE+) for cameras requiring > 15W (PTZ cameras, infrared cameras with heaters); (2) Dedicated NVR circuit (typically 230V, fused separately for 24/7 operation); (3) Optionally: Hikvision DS-KD8003-IME2 video intercom module in panel DIN-rail format (intercom gateway) — integrates with 2N or DoorBird ecosystems. The standard recommendation: Hikvision for cost-optimised CCTV coverage (parking, garage, perimeter), Mobotix or Axis for premium areas requiring edge processing and data sovereignty.

Used in these project types

Residential CCTV — 4× DS-2CD2143G2-I cameras covering driveway, garage, garden; HA triggers KNX alarm zone
Apartment blocks — NVR with per-floor cameras; lobby person detection → KNX lobby lighting ON
Commercial premises — perimeter AcuSense cameras; vehicle detection → KNX barrier open
Villa projects — ColorVu for pool area; garden motion → KNX exterior lighting + alarm notification
Office car parks — licence plate recognition camera (Hikvision LPR) → KNX relay → barrier

Hikvision products

Key components we install

DS-2CD2143G2-IIndoor/Outdoor IP Dome Camera

Hikvision AcuSense 4MP Dome

4MP AcuSense AI camera (person/vehicle detection). IR 40m. IP67, IK10. H.265+. False alarm filtering via AcuSense reduces nuisance triggers (animals, leaves). ONVIF Profile S + ISAPI. Standard specification for KNX perimeter cameras — high accuracy person detection → KNX alarm relay → KNX exterior lighting trigger. PoE 802.3af.

DS-2CD2T47G2-LOutdoor IP Turret Camera (Colour Night)

Hikvision ColorVu 4MP Turret

ColorVu — full colour video in near-zero light (0.003 lux). White light supplement LED. No IR — produces colour rather than black/white night vision. For car park and driveway illumination-integrated cameras where colour identification matters (licence plate colour, clothing colour). AcuSense AI included.

DS-7616NXI-K2Network Video Recorder

Hikvision AcuSense NVR 16ch

16-channel PoE NVR with AcuSense AI analytics. Supports up to 16TB (2× 8TB HDD). H.265+. Remote access via iVMS-4200 and Hik-Connect mobile app. ONVIF. Sends HTTP alarm notifications from NVR to HA webhook for centralised KNX event triggering — one NVR alarm → KNX, rather than configuring each camera individually.

DS-KD8003-IME2Video Intercom Module

Hikvision Video Intercom Gateway

Modular video door station compatible with Hikvision indoor monitors and SIP phones. TCP/IP, H.264 video, 2MP camera. For projects fully committed to Hikvision ecosystem — door station + indoor monitor + NVR all within Hik ecosystem. KNX relay integration via dry contact output for door unlock.

Hikvision FAQ

How does Hikvision motion detection trigger a KNX event?

Configure in Hikvision camera web interface: Configuration → Event → Basic Event → Motion Detection → Linkage Method → HTTP Notification → enter HA webhook URL. When motion is detected, the camera POSTs to the HA webhook → HA automation fires → KNX send service → KNX group address set to 1. Also configure the clear event (motion stops) for automatic reset. Test by waving in front of camera and watching HA logbook.

What is the difference between Hikvision and Mobotix for KNX projects?

Hikvision: cost-effective, wide product range, excellent value at €80–300/camera, industry-standard NVR ecosystem, basic on-camera analytics (motion, AcuSense). Processing happens on NVR — camera is dumb without NVR. Mobotix: premium German engineering (€400–1200/camera), on-board edge processing (camera records independently of NVR), no cloud dependency, stricter data sovereignty. For KNX residential: Hikvision is the standard for cost-sensitive CCTV coverage; Mobotix for premium projects where data privacy and camera autonomy matter.

Are Hikvision cameras allowed in EU government and public sector projects?

Hikvision has faced procurement restrictions in some countries — notably a UK government directive (2022) prohibiting new Hikvision/Dahua installations in sensitive government locations, and US NDAA restrictions. In mainland Europe, there are no blanket EU-wide restrictions as of 2024 — but individual government clients or projects with US federal funding may prohibit Hikvision. Always verify project requirements. For government and public sector KNX projects, consider Axis (Sweden) or Mobotix (Germany) as EU-manufactured alternatives.
