Homeworks QS architecture: the HQP7 processor (DIN-rail, Linux-based) manages up to 200 controlled devices (dimmers, switches, shades, temperature sensors) across 100+ circuits. Devices communicate over the HWQS system bus — a proprietary 4-wire RS-485-derived bus running at 9600 baud, separate from KNX TP. HWQS keypads (HWKP8, HQRD) send scene recall commands to HQP7, which executes lighting scenes with Lutron's characteristic smooth sine-wave dimming at 1-second fade time. HQP7 includes Ethernet RJ45 for app connectivity, remote access via Lutron Connect Bridge, and third-party integration including KNX. CLEAR CONNECT wireless: Lutron's proprietary 433/434 MHz wireless protocol for battery-powered remotes and tabletop controllers. CLEAR CONNECT uses frequency agility (hops across 5 channels) and mesh ACK handshaking for zero-missed-command reliability at up to 9m through walls. For KNX installations: CLEAR CONNECT wireless keypads can trigger Lutron scenes that simultaneously send KNX group address telegrams via HQP7 KNXnet/IP — eliminating the need for separate KNX wireless devices in rooms where Lutron keypads are already installed. KNX integration workflow: the Lutron HQP7 KNXnet/IP module (configured in HW-ACCESS-LINK software) maps each Lutron zone to KNX group addresses: zone ON/OFF → DPT 1.001; zone dim level → DPT 5.001 (0-255); scene recall → DPT 18.001 (scene 0-63). ETS6 receives these as virtual KNX devices. KNX presence sensors (Elsner KNX TH-UP, BEG PD9-KNX) send occupancy telegrams that HQP7 intercepts — triggering Lutron "Occupied" scene at appropriate lux setpoint. Can Lutron Homeworks QS control KNX actuators directly?

Yes — indirectly. The HQP7 KNXnet/IP module sends KNX group address telegrams when Lutron events occur (scene recall, zone level change, keypad button press). This triggers KNX actuators on the same KNX line: a Lutron 'Good Night' scene can simultaneously dim all Lutron zones AND send KNX DPT 18.001 to close blinds via a KNX Somfy actuator AND write a KNX thermostat setpoint to 18°C economy mode. The HQP7 does not need direct wiring to KNX actuators — all communication is via KNXnet/IP over the LAN. ETS6 handles the KNX actuator programming independently.

What is the difference between Lutron Homeworks QS and Radio RA3?

Homeworks QS is Lutron's wired commercial/luxury residential system — all dimmers on the HWQS system bus, processor-based, up to 200 devices. Radio RA3 is Lutron's next-generation wireless system (replacing Radio RA2) for mid-market residential — fully wireless dimmers (CLEAR CONNECT RF), Smart Bridge Pro 3 hub, no wired system bus. RA3 supports up to 75 devices and integrates with HomeKit, Google, Alexa, and Home Assistant via local API. For KNX integration: Homeworks QS has native KNXnet/IP. Radio RA3 requires the Home Assistant bridge approach. Homeworks QS is typically specified for projects above €20k automation budget; Radio RA3 for €3k-15k.

Does Lutron Homeworks QS require a dedicated programming company?

Yes for initial setup. Lutron Homeworks QS programming uses the proprietary HW-ACCESS-LINK software (Windows, Mac), which requires a Lutron dealer account to download. Programming involves: system file creation, device assignment, scene programming, keypad button mapping, and KNX integration configuration. All of this must be done by a Lutron-authorised dealer. Ongoing changes (scene level adjustments, new keypad buttons) can be made by the dealer remotely via the Lutron Connect Bridge. Homeowners can adjust lights via the Lutron app but cannot change scene programming without dealer access — by design, to protect system integrity.
