XProtect Open-Platform VMS — 12,000+ Camera Models, KNX Integration via MIP SDK

Milestone Systems (Copenhagen, Denmark, founded 1998, subsidiary of Canon Inc. since 2014) develops XProtect, the world's most widely deployed open-platform video management software. With certified support for 12,000+ camera models from 150+ manufacturers and a published MIP (Milestone Integration Platform) SDK, XProtect is the VMS standard for European corporate security, critical infrastructure, transportation, and large-scale retail installations. XProtect integrates with KNX via MIP SDK-based plugins, enabling video analytics events (motion, line crossing, ANPR, face recognition) to trigger KNX group address actions — lights on, door unlock, alarm notification — without a separate home automation server.

How we use Milestone Systems

XProtect editions: XProtect Essential+ (free, up to 8 cameras, basic recording), XProtect Express+ (25-50 cameras, basic analytics), XProtect Professional+ (unlimited cameras, full analytics, server HA), XProtect Corporate (unlimited cameras, federated architecture, distributed servers, advanced analytics integration). For KNX integration projects: XProtect Professional+ or Corporate is required — the MIP SDK is only available to registered Milestone Integration Partners with these editions. XProtect server runs on Windows Server (2016/2019/2022), with SQL Server Express for up to 300 cameras (free tier), or SQL Server Standard for larger installations. MIP SDK and KNX plugin architecture: Milestone provides the MIP SDK (C#, .NET) for integration developers to create XProtect plugins and extensions. The KNX Plugin by Isys (Isys nv, Belgium) is the certified third-party MIP plugin bridging XProtect events to KNX. Architecture: XProtect server → KNX Plugin (runs as Windows service on XProtect server host) → KNXnet/IP tunnelling → KNX IP Router → KNX bus. Configuration: KNX Plugin settings define: for each camera event type (motion detection, object crossing, ANPR plate match, face recognition) → mapped KNX group address → DPT value to send (DPT 1.001 binary trigger, DPT 18.001 scene recall). Example: camera 01 motion event → KNX GA 6/0/0 DPT 1.001 value 1 → ABB switch actuator → stairwell lights ON for 5 minutes. XProtect Smart Client and KNX status display: the XProtect Smart Client (Windows WPF application) is the operator console for live view, playback, alarm management, and analytics review. Smart Client MIP plugins can display KNX device states in the Smart Client interface: access control door status (open/closed, from KNX binary group address), zone occupancy (from KNX presence detector), alarm state (from KNX intrusion panel output). This creates a unified security console showing video + building automation state — particularly useful for hotel security desks managing CCTV, access control, and building alarms from a single screen. ANPR and access control integration: XProtect ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) via Milestone Video Insight or BriefCam integration: vehicle licence plate recognised at entry → XProtect ANPR module matches against database → KNX Plugin sends trigger to KNX group address → KNX actuator opens barrier (DPT 1.001 → relay to barrier controller). Face recognition: XProtect with BriefCam or Briefcam VC analytics: face match → KNX door release pulse (500ms DPT 1.001 trigger → KNX relay output → door strike). Integration audit log: all KNX trigger events from XProtect are logged in XProtect alarm log — timestamp, camera, event type, KNX GA triggered — meeting GDPR Article 25 accountability requirements for automated biometric processing.

XProtect integrates with KNX via the Isys KNX Plugin (MIP SDK, XProtect Professional+/Corporate). Camera events (motion, analytics, ANPR, face recognition) trigger KNX group address writes. KNX device states can be displayed in Smart Client MIP panels. XProtect ANPR triggers KNX access control actions (gate/barrier release) and KNX lighting automation.

Milestone Systems FAQ

Which XProtect edition is needed for KNX integration?

KNX integration requires XProtect Professional+ or XProtect Corporate — both support MIP SDK plugins and third-party analytics. The KNX Plugin by Isys (the standard MIP plugin for KNX integration) requires a Milestone Integration Partner MIP SDK licence, included in Professional+ and Corporate server licences. XProtect Essential+ and Express+ do not support MIP plugins and cannot use the KNX plugin. For smaller projects (under 16 cameras, single site), consider an alternative integration approach: Home Assistant with XProtect ONVIF integration feeding KNX, which does not require MIP SDK.

Can XProtect send a KNX telegram when a specific licence plate is detected?

Yes. XProtect with an ANPR analytics plugin (Milestone Video Insight or BriefCam) can match detected plates against a watchlist database. The Isys KNX Plugin subscribes to XProtect ANPR match events. Configuration: ANPR match event for plate list 'Authorised Vehicles' → KNX Plugin → write DPT 1.001 value 1 to KNX GA 6/0/0 for 500ms → KNX N530 relay output → barrier signal. Per-plate group logic: match 'Staff Plate AA123BB' → KNX GA 6/0/1 (staff barrier), match 'Visitor ZZ999XP' → KNX GA 6/0/2 (visitor barrier) — different KNX group addresses per ANPR watchlist. Time-of-day restriction: XProtect Smart Client alarm rule: ANPR match AND time 08:00-18:00 → trigger KNX; outside hours → trigger KNX alert only (no barrier release), send email notification.

Does XProtect store video of all KNX-triggered events?

Yes — XProtect can be configured to record on event: KNX Plugin sends a recording bookmark to XProtect simultaneously with the KNX group address trigger. Configuration: KNX Plugin event → XProtect Alarm → bound to recording rule: 'Start recording 5 seconds before event, continue 30 seconds after event on all cameras in event zone'. These bookmarked recordings are searchable in Smart Client by event type, date, and camera. Retention: bookmarked recordings can have a longer retention period than standard motion recordings (e.g., 90 days for ANPR events vs 30 days for general motion), configured per recording rule. For GDPR compliance: limit ANPR/face recognition-triggered extended recordings to authorised retention periods defined in your GDPR ROPA (Record of Processing Activities) documentation.
