Nuki Home Solutions (Graz, Austria — founded 2014) manufactures Europe's best-selling retrofit smart locks. The Nuki Smart Lock attaches to the inside of an existing door, replacing only the thumbturn — no locksmith, no cylinder change, no drilling. Nuki is the first-choice smart lock for EU residential smart home projects because it works with the existing Euro profile cylinder and offers robust API-based integration with KNX via Home Assistant.

How we use Nuki
Nuki's ecosystem covers the full access management chain: the Smart Lock itself (Bluetooth + optional Wi-Fi/Matter), Nuki Bridge (Bluetooth-to-IP bridge for API access), Nuki Opener (video intercom integration for apartment buildings), Nuki Keypad (PIN/card entry), and Nuki Fob (remote). For KNX integration, the Nuki Bridge enables real-time state reporting (locked/unlocked/unlatched) and remote actuation via the local Nuki API — which Home Assistant bridges to KNX group addresses.
In our panels, Nuki integration does not require dedicated hardware in the panel itself — the lock is self-contained. The KNX connection is software-based: Nuki Bridge → Nuki local API → Home Assistant Nuki integration → KNX group addresses via HA KNX integration. Typical use: door unlocked event → KNX binary output → 'Welcome home' scene (lights on, heating setpoint raised, alarm disarmed). Or: KNX scene trigger (departure) → HA automation → Nuki API call → door locked.

Nuki Bridge
Bluetooth-to-Wi-Fi bridge. Connects Nuki Smart Lock to local network for API access, remote operation without cloud dependency, and Home Assistant local integration. Required for KNX integration path.

Nuki FAQ
How does Nuki integrate with KNX?
Via software bridge: Nuki Bridge exposes a local REST API (no cloud required). Home Assistant's Nuki integration reads lock state and sends commands. HA KNX integration then publishes state to KNX group addresses and subscribes to KNX commands. Example: KNX '0 = night mode' telegram → HA automation → Nuki API call → lock door. No panel hardware change needed.
Does Nuki work without internet / cloud?
Yes — Nuki Bridge provides a fully local API (HTTP) that works on the local network without internet. Home Assistant's Nuki integration uses this local API by default. Cloud features (remote access, app outside home Wi-Fi) require internet, but core KNX integration runs locally.
Is Nuki compatible with Matter?
Nuki Smart Lock 4.0 Pro supports Matter over Wi-Fi. This enables native integration with Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa without a bridge. For KNX, the Home Assistant → Nuki local API path remains more reliable than Matter as it provides full state feedback and scripting flexibility.
Can Nuki replace a mortise lock or multi-point lock?
No — Nuki Smart Lock is designed for single-cylinder Euro profile doors (the thumb-turn type). Multi-point locks (Roto, Winkhaus) have their own thumb-turn mechanism but the locking action is heavier; Nuki may not reliably drive them. For multi-point locks, a motorised cylinder (e.g. Assa Abloy CL500) or motorised escutcheon is the correct solution.
What is Nuki Opener and how does it work with 2N intercom?
Nuki Opener connects to the analogue bus wiring of most apartment intercoms to detect ring events and trigger door release. With 2N IP intercoms: Opener wires to the analogue output of the 2N analog interface module (not direct IP). For full KNX+2N integration, the 2N relay output is wired to a KNX binary input — Nuki Opener then adds app-based ring notification on top.
