Q-SYS consists of Q-SYS Core DSP processors, AoIP (audio over IP) routing via Dante and AES67, HDMI AV endpoint nodes, and UCI (User Control Interface) touchpanel control. How we use QSC

The Q-SYS Designer KNX plugin is installed directly from the Q-SYS Designer Plugin Manager (search 'KNX' in the plugin catalogue). Configuration: select KNXnet/IP tunnelling as transport, enter the IP address of the KNX IP router (e.g. MDT SCN-IP100.02, Gira X1, or Weinzierl 730), and assign tunnel credentials if required. Once connected, Q-SYS Designer controls appear in the plugin panel — Level faders, Mute buttons, Preset Recall buttons, Source Select, and Gain control — and each is bound to a KNX group address via the plugin properties. Data point types are selectable per control: DPT 5.001 (0–100%) for level control, DPT 1.001 for mute, DPT 18.001 for scene/preset recall. Conference room AV scene integration: when a KNX occupancy sensor (MDT SCN-BMI55.02 PIR binary input) sends occupancy telegram to GA 3/0/5, a Q-SYS plugin binding triggers a Q-SYS preset recall — restoring the room's last-used AV configuration (volume levels, source selection, display on). Simultaneously, KNX logic dims lighting to presentation level (DALI scene 3) and raises the motorised projection screen (KNX blind actuator). The KNX occupancy GA drives both AV and lighting scenes from a single sensor, with no separate room controller programming required. The Q-SYS UCI (User Control Interface) provides 7-inch and 10-inch touchpanel displays for AV room control. UCI panels can be programmed to write to KNX group addresses directly via the Q-SYS KNX plugin — a UCI button 'Lights On' can send a KNX value-1 telegram to GA 1/0/0 (main lighting), while a UCI fader 'Room Volume' maps to both Q-SYS audio level and KNX level display. This two-way binding means that if KNX room lighting is changed from a wall switch, the UCI panel updates to reflect the new state — true bidirectional AV and building integration from a single touchpanel. Dante AoIP room combine and split scenes are a complex multi-room AV scenario frequently required in hotel ballrooms and conference centre suites. When two rooms are combined (moveable partition removed), a KNX partition sensor (microswitch binary input → MDT SCN-8V.01) triggers a KNX scene that writes a specific value to a Q-SYS preset recall GA — Q-SYS switches to the combined room audio routing matrix (both rooms share one DSP output, microphones are mixed, volume controls linked). When rooms split, KNX partition sensor open-state triggers a different Q-SYS preset restoring independent room audio.

How do I install the Q-SYS KNX plugin?

Open Q-SYS Designer → Asset Manager (top menu) → Plugin Manager tab → search 'KNX' → install the KNX plugin (published by QSC or verified third party). After installation, drag the KNX plugin component onto the design canvas. In the plugin properties panel: set Transport to 'KNXnet/IP Tunnelling', enter KNX IP Router IP address (e.g. 192.168.1.200), set tunnel index (0 for first tunnel connection). Add KNX Group Address bindings: click '+', enter GA (e.g. 3/0/5), select DPT (5.001 for level, 1.001 for binary, 18.001 for scene), and connect the GA endpoint to the Q-SYS control (Level fader pin, Mute button pin, etc.).

Can Q-SYS volume control be two-way with KNX — so a KNX wall panel adjusts Q-SYS volume?

Yes — the Q-SYS KNX plugin binding is bidirectional for applicable DPTs. Bind a KNX GA (DPT 5.001) to the Q-SYS Level fader 'Position' pin. If a KNX room controller writes a value (e.g. 60 = 60%) to that GA, the Q-SYS plugin receives the telegram and adjusts the DSP level to the corresponding dB value. Conversely, if Q-SYS changes the level (via UCI panel or Q-SYS preset recall), the plugin writes the new DPT 5.001 value back to the KNX GA — updating any KNX displays or indicators showing current volume. This is the standard implementation for hotel room AV/KNX room controllers.

How does Q-SYS integrate with a KNX video conferencing lighting scene?

Implement a Q-SYS 'Call Active' status pin (available on Q-SYS videoconference codec control components for Cisco WebEx, Microsoft Teams Room, Zoom Room). Bind the 'Call Active' boolean output to a KNX plugin binary GA (DPT 1.001). When a video call starts, Q-SYS writes 1 to the KNX GA → KNX logic triggers DALI lighting scene for video (key light on, backlight dimmed, window blind closed). When the call ends, Q-SYS writes 0 → KNX restores the pre-call lighting scene. This integration requires no separate room control system — Q-SYS is the AV controller and KNX drives all lighting and blind automation based on Q-SYS call state.
