TS8 and AX Enclosures: Industry Standard for KNX Panel Assembly
Rittal (Herborn, Germany) is Europe's largest enclosure manufacturer — TS8 bayed enclosures and AX compact boxes are the standard housing for KNX distribution panels in commercial and industrial buildings across Europe. Rittal enclosures meet EN 60529 (IP ratings), IK ratings, and are available with factory-fitted DIN rail, mounting plates, and cable management.

How we use Rittal
TS8 bayed enclosure system: modular widths 400-1200mm, heights 600-2200mm, depths 200-800mm. Standard DIN rail mounting plate included (2mm zinc-plated steel, 35mm DIN rail per EN 50022). For a KNX panel: TS8 600×600×250 (W×H×D) accommodates 8-10 DIN rail rows × 12 modules each = 96-120 DIN rail modules. Cable entry: gland plate bottom, cable duct left/right sides. IP rating: IP54 standard, IP66 with sealing kit. AX compact enclosure: polycarbonate or fibreglass reinforced polyester (GRP), IP66/IK09, sizes 200×200×80 to 600×800×300. Ideal for outdoor KNX sub-panels, junction boxes, and zone panels. SE8 small enclosure: IP65, DIN rail strip mountable, for KNX/IP gateway or DALI power supply. RiNano DIN rail: aluminium 35mm symmetrical (EN 50022) rail, 1m lengths, cuts cleanly with a hacksaw — preferred for KNX panel DIN rail. Rittal Blue e+ cooling unit: 300W-4000W DIN rail or wall-mounted cooling for panels with significant heat dissipation. KNX heat load estimate: 1 MDT actuator = ~0.5W, 1 Gira IP Router = ~3W, 1 KNX power supply = ~12W steady-state (2W internal heat). 48-actuator panel: ~30W heat — typically adequate with passive ventilation grilles (bottom intake, top exhaust). CMC III monitoring: DIN rail Compact module for temperature, humidity, smoke — Modbus TCP to KNX gateway for building integration.
Rittal enclosures are the housing for KNX panels — not a KNX device itself, but essential infrastructure. Rittal CMC III monitoring modules provide Modbus TCP data (panel temperature, humidity) readable by KNX building management systems.

TS8 or AX for KNX panels — which to choose?
TS8 for large distribution panels (full floor distribution, 600mm+ wide, 96+ DIN modules). AX compact for small zone panels (up to 12 DIN modules) and outdoor installations requiring IP66.
Can the AX GRP enclosure be used outdoors?
Yes — AX GRP is rated IP66/IK09. Use IP66 cable glands (Roxtec or Jacob) for all cable entries to maintain the IP66 rating. Avoid direct south-facing sunlight without a sun shade.
How much enclosure space does a KNX panel need?
Calculate 1.5 DIN rail module positions per KNX component on average. 100-module panel: TS8 600×600 with 8 rows. 200-module: TS8 800×1200 with 14 rows. Add 20% spare capacity for future expansion.
