Role in our panels
How we use Sauter
The Sauter modulo 6 BMS controller series (EY6300, EY6400, EY6500) provides multi-protocol DDC (Direct Digital Control) for large commercial and institutional buildings. The controllers run IEC 61131-3 CASE Engine logic, support BACnet/IP and BACnet MS/TP, Modbus RTU/TCP, and LON natively, and offer the modu526 KNX gateway as a direct plug-in module. The modulo 6 architecture uses an Ethernet backbone linking controllers in a supervisor tree — field level controllers (FW100 VAV panels, EY-AM300 AHU modules) communicate via BACnet MS/TP to the modulo 6 supervisor. The Sauter modu526 is a dedicated KNX-BACnet gateway with a full ETS6 application certified by KNX Association. Import procedure: download ETS6 application from Sauter MyPortal (free registration); import into ETS6 via online catalog or manual file import; add modu526 as a KNX device in the ETS6 project; configure the BACnet device IP address and Device ID in the ETS6 application parameters. Group objects appear for each BACnet object mapped: bidirectional communication is supported — KNX can read and write BACnet objects, and BACnet value changes propagate to KNX GAs automatically. Sauter CASE Engine (IEC 61131-3 programming environment embedded in modulo 6 controllers) bridges complex HVAC sequences to KNX trigger inputs. Example logic: IF KNX GA 7/0/0 (HVAC mode DPT 20.102) = 3 (Economy) AND GA 7/0/1 (occupancy DPT 1.001) = 0 (unoccupied) THEN write BACnet Analog Variable 'AHU1 Supply Air Setpoint' = 18°C (heating economy) AND write BACnet Analog Variable 'AHU1 Cooling Setpoint' = 26°C (cooling economy). CASE Engine monitors KNX GA values via modu526 and uses them as inputs to HVAC sequences — a more sophisticated integration than simple register mapping. Sauter Vision Center SCADA provides web-based building visualisation with live KNX data overlaid on floor plan SVG files. KNX GAs mapped through modu526 to modulo 6 BACnet appear as data points in Vision Center — temperature readings, lighting levels, door contacts from KNX devices are visible alongside BMS data points (AHU status, chiller return temp, VAV positions) on a single floor plan. Vision Center M&T module logs both KNX energy GAs and BACnet energy objects for BREEAM Ene 02 metering and targeting reports.
Sauter modu526 is a dedicated KNX-BACnet gateway with full ETS6 application. Download from Sauter MyPortal → ETS6 online catalog import. Group objects: each BACnet object (Analog Input/Output, Binary Input/Output) appears as a KNX group object — bidirectional. Configuration: set BACnet device IP, browse object list in modu526 ETS6 application, assign GAs. CASE Engine creates logic: IF KNX GA 7/0/0 (HVAC mode) = 3 (Economy) THEN write BACnet AV 'AHU1 Supply Setpoint' = 18°C. Vision Center: place KNX GA on floor plan as live data point overlay.

Used in open-plan offices, university lecture theatres, and hospital wards.
Sauter FAQ
Does Sauter have a native KNX gateway?
Yes — the Sauter modu526 is a dedicated KNX-BACnet gateway with a full ETS6 application certified by KNX Association. Unlike third-party gateways (LOYTEC LGATE, Intesis) that require separate configuration software, the modu526 is configured entirely within ETS6: download the ETS6 application from Sauter MyPortal, import into ETS6, add the modu526 as a KNX device, configure BACnet device IP in ETS6 application parameters, browse available BACnet objects, and assign KNX group addresses. Bidirectional communication is supported — modu526 reads and writes both KNX and BACnet.
Can Sauter BMS control KNX lighting scenes?
Yes — via the modu526 KNX gateway, Sauter CASE Engine logic can write to KNX group addresses including DPT 18.001 (scene activation). Example: a CASE Engine schedule block at 07:00 on workdays writes 'Scene 1 Activate' to KNX GA linked to Gira or Basalte scene actuator — the lighting system transitions from overnight standby to office working level. Similarly, CASE Engine occupancy data (from PIR sensors on BACnet FW100 panels) can drive KNX presence simulation scenes. CASE Engine handles the logic and scheduling; modu526 handles the KNX protocol translation.
Is Sauter suitable for BREEAM certification projects?
Yes — Sauter ecos504 energy optimiser combined with Vision Center M&T module satisfies BREEAM Ene 02 energy monitoring requirements. The ecos504 monitors energy from M-Bus meters, BACnet energy objects, and KNX DPT 13.013 energy GAs (via modu526), providing sub-metering of heating, cooling, lighting, small power, and DHW as required by BREEAM Ene 02. Vision Center generates automated energy reports with 15-minute interval data. PanelCraft provides the BREEAM Ene 02 documentation checklist and system configuration as part of the commissioning package for Sauter projects.
