Siemens

Enterprise building automation — KNX, BACnet and Desigo CC from Germany.

Siemens, founded in 1847 in Berlin, is one of the world's largest industrial technology companies. In building automation, Siemens spans the full spectrum from KNX room automation (Gamma range) to enterprise BMS (Desigo CC) and industrial protection (5SM, 5SL series). Their involvement in KNX stretches back to the founding of the EIB standard. For large commercial buildings, hospitals and campus facilities, Siemens provides the integration backbone that connects KNX, BACnet, HVAC and building management in a single platform.

Role in our panels

How we use Siemens

Siemens KNX Gamma devices (5WG1 series) are used in premium commercial installations where Siemens is the specified brand or where integration with Desigo CC is required. The Gamma range covers push-buttons, presence detectors, actuators and IP gateways. In panels where the client operates a Siemens BMS, we design the KNX layer to communicate with Desigo CC via Siemens OPC-UA or BACnet/IP gateway — providing seamless integration between room automation and building management.

For large commercial projects, Siemens KNX devices sit in the room automation layer while Desigo CC provides the building management overlay. We install Siemens 5WG1 KNX binary inputs and actuators alongside the Siemens N148/31 KNX IP router for ETS access. Siemens 5SM series RCDs and 5SL miniature circuit breakers provide the protection layer in enterprise-grade distribution panels. For energy management, Siemens 7KM PAC power monitoring devices feed Modbus data to the KNX system.

Siemens FAQ

When should I choose Siemens KNX over MDT or Hager?

Siemens KNX makes the most sense when the project already uses Siemens Desigo CC as the building management system, or when Siemens is the general contractor requirement. For standalone KNX installations without BMS integration, MDT and Hager offer better value at comparable quality. Siemens' strength is in the enterprise integration layer, not in price competitiveness.

What is Desigo CC and how does it connect to KNX?

Desigo CC is Siemens' enterprise building management system for large commercial buildings. It manages HVAC, access control, fire, energy and KNX room automation from one platform. KNX integrates via the Siemens KNX IP Router or OPC-UA gateway — all KNX group addresses become available as Desigo CC data points for central control, scheduling and reporting.

Are Siemens 5SM RCDs better than Schneider Acti9?

Both are IEC 61008/61009 certified and are high-quality products. Siemens 5SM and Schneider Acti9 are comparable in performance and reliability. The choice often comes down to the installer's preferred brand, regional distributor relationships and project BOM consistency. We specify whichever best fits the project requirements.

Do you provide Desigo CC configuration alongside the KNX panel?

We configure the KNX side — ETS programming, IP router setup, group address mapping. Desigo CC configuration (data point mapping, graphics, trend logs) is typically handled by a Siemens BMS partner, though we can provide the KNX group address export and coordinate the integration. Complex BMS projects are quoted on a project basis.
