SMMS VRF with TCB-IFKNX1 Native KNX Adapter and Estia Heat Pump

Toshiba Air Conditioning (Fujisawa, Japan; EU operations via Carrier Global since 2017) manufactures the SMMS-e VRF range for European commercial buildings. The TCB-IFKNX1 native KNX adapter integrates each SMMS indoor unit directly into KNX — on/off, mode, setpoint, room temperature, fan speed, and fault code group objects, fully ETS6 programmable. Estia heat pump (R32, 4.5–16kW, SG Ready) also supports TCB-IFKNX1 integration.

How we use Toshiba HVAC

SMMS-e VRF architecture: Toshiba SMMS-e outdoor units (R32, inverter, 8–56kW, up to 50 indoor units), indoor unit types: 4-way cassette (RAV-M), ducted (RAV-SP), wall-mount, ceiling concealed. TCC-Link bus: Toshiba proprietary 2-wire communication (similar to Panasonic M-NET) connecting indoor and outdoor units — each indoor has TCC-Link port for BMS adapter. TCB-IFKNX1 adapter: DIN-rail, 4 modules wide, 24V DC, plugs into indoor unit TCC-Link port, KNX TP connection. One TCB-IFKNX1 per indoor unit. TCB-IFKNX1 ETS6 configuration: ETS6 application downloaded from Toshiba partner portal. Parameters: TCC-Link address (0–63, must match indoor unit DIP switch), operation mode options, setpoint range 16–30°C, periodic status sending interval (60s default), fault code object enable. Group objects: On/Off (DPT 1.001), Mode (DPT 20.105: Auto/Heat/Cool/Fan/Dry), Setpoint (DPT 9.001), Room temperature feedback (DPT 9.001, read-only), Fan speed (DPT 5.001 0-100%), Fault status (DPT 1.001), Fault code (DPT 5.010). Standard ETS6 programming: link each object to functional GA structure (GA main group = 7, sub-group = room number). Estia heat pump integration: Toshiba Estia HWS-xxx (R32, 4.5/6/8/11/16kW, ErP A+++ certified, built-in DHW tank model available). TCB-IFKNX1 installs same way as VRF indoor unit. Additional Estia KNX objects: DHW temperature (DPT 9.001), DHW mode (DPT 1.001), defrost active (DPT 1.001). SG Ready: Estia PCB has SG Ready dry-contact input — connect KNX binary output relay for PV surplus activation (same S1/S2 state logic as Vaillant/Nibe). Comparison with Panasonic and LG: Toshiba TCB-IFKNX1 (native KNX, 1 adapter/unit) vs Panasonic CZ-CAPRA1 (native KNX, 1 adapter/unit) — nearly identical integration approach. Toshiba SMMS-e and Panasonic PAC-i both use similar 2-wire TCC-Link/M-NET buses. LG LGAP requires external Modbus gateway (more complex). Choose VRF brand based on specification, local distributor support, and price — KNX integration effort is equivalent for Toshiba and Panasonic.

Native KNX TP integration via TCB-IFKNX1 adapter — one adapter per SMMS indoor unit, full ETS6 application, group objects for all control and status parameters. No external Modbus gateway required.

Additional KNX objects: DHW temperature setpoint, DHW mode, defrost active status. SG Ready dry-contact input for KNX PV surplus control alongside TCB-IFKNX1.

Toshiba standalone BMS controller for managing up to 128 indoor units with schedule, group, and energy reporting. No native KNX bus output — used as an alternative to TCB-IFKNX1 adapters where a Toshiba-centric BMS is preferred over KNX integration. Not required when TCB-IFKNX1 adapters are fitted.

How many TCB-IFKNX1 adapters for a 30-indoor-unit system?

One per indoor unit = 30 adapters. All 30 can be on the same KNX TP line if within line device limit (64 max without repeater). For large systems: evaluate Toshiba TCC-MODBUS gateway (interfaces multiple indoor units via one Modbus TCP gateway) as a lower hardware cost alternative to individual TCB-IFKNX1 per unit.

Does TCB-IFKNX1 work with both SMMS-e and older SMMS systems?

TCB-IFKNX1 is compatible with Toshiba SMMS-e and SMMS-i series (check compatibility list on Toshiba partner portal). Not compatible with older VRF systems using different TCC-Link protocol version. Verify indoor unit model compatibility before ordering adapters.

Can Toshiba Estia be controlled via both TCB-IFKNX1 and SG Ready simultaneously?

Yes — SG Ready dry-contact input and TCB-IFKNX1 KNX adapter operate independently. SG Ready sets operating mode (comfort/eco/max), TCB-IFKNX1 provides setpoint and on/off control. Both can be active simultaneously without conflict.
