How we use Uniview (UNV)

Ultra 265 codec: UNV's proprietary video compression codec based on H.265 with additional intelligent encoding optimisations. Ultra 265 achieves 50% lower bitrate than standard H.265 (and 75% lower than H.264) for the same image quality by applying background scene modelling — static areas (walls, floors) are encoded at very low detail while dynamic objects (people, vehicles) retain full resolution. A 4MP UNV dome camera streaming at 2560×1440 typically consumes 1.5–2 Mbps with Ultra 265, compared to 3–4 Mbps with standard H.265. This enables significantly longer video retention on the same NVR storage: a 32TB NVR recording 32 × 4MP cameras at 15fps with motion detection achieves 60+ days retention with Ultra 265 versus 30 days with H.264. ONVIF integration for KNX and smart building systems: all UNV cameras support ONVIF Profile S (video streaming) and Profile G (local recording/playback), with most models also supporting ONVIF Profile T (advanced video, H.265) and Profile M (metadata/analytics). For KNX integration, UNV cameras expose motion detection and smart detection (line crossing, intrusion, face detection) as HTTP URL actions or ONVIF event notifications. Uniview (UNV) FAQ

Is Uniview (UNV) on the US NDAA ban list like Hikvision and Dahua?

No — Uniview is NOT listed on the NDAA 2019 Section 889 ban for US federal government purchases. Hikvision and Dahua are banned from federal procurement and from products of companies using them for US government contracts. UNV does not appear on this list. However, UNV is partially owned by Hikvision shareholders, which has raised concern among some compliance-sensitive European organisations. For UK and EU government projects with US federal contract exposure, it is advisable to verify current supply chain disclosure requirements with your legal team, as the regulatory landscape continues to evolve.

What is the difference between UNV Ultra 265 and standard H.265?

Standard H.265 (HEVC) reduces bitrate approximately 50% versus H.264 at equivalent quality by using larger coding units, improved motion estimation, and better intra-frame prediction. UNV's Ultra 265 adds an additional background modelling layer: the encoder identifies areas of the scene that change rarely (walls, ceilings, empty floor) and encodes them at very low detail, allocating more bits to dynamic foreground objects. The result is typically 50% lower bitrate than standard H.265 for the same perceived quality — or 75% lower than H.264. The trade-off: Ultra 265 streams require UNV-compatible NVRs or VMS with Ultra 265 decoding support. Standard ONVIF/RTSP streams from UNV cameras default to H.264 or H.265 for third-party VMS compatibility.

Can UNV cameras be integrated with non-UNV NVRs and VMS platforms?

Yes. UNV cameras expose ONVIF Profile S (live streaming) and Profile G (recording) streams accessible to any ONVIF-compatible NVR or VMS: Milestone XProtect, Genetec Security Center, Hanwha Wisenet WAVE, Axis Camera Station, Synology Surveillance Station. The main limitation is that Ultra 265 streams are only decoded correctly by UNV NVRs and EZStation VMS — third-party systems will fall back to H.265 or H.264 streams, losing the bandwidth advantage. For KNX integration, ONVIF Profile T event notifications (motion, line crossing) are supported on most VMS platforms and can trigger KNX actions via the VMS event engine or via Home Assistant ONVIF integration.
