In smart building automation, Velux INTEGRA series windows (electric, solar-powered) use the io-homecontrol wireless protocol (868MHz, bidirectional) — also used by Somfy for roller shutters and Renson for facades. For KNX integration, the io-homecontrol protocol requires a gateway: Velux KIX 300 or the broader io-homecontrol-to-KNX bridge (VELUX ACTIVE with NETATMO or third-party gateways like IntesisHome or Home Assistant with io-homecontrol USB adapter). Rain sensor integration is critical — Velux INTEGRA windows close automatically on rain detection via the built-in io-homecontrol rain sensor (WLS 200K).

How we use Velux
Velux INTEGRA windows integrate with KNX via the io-homecontrol wireless protocol bridge. The most practical path for KNX professionals: (1) Velux KIX 300 + io-homecontrol-to-KNX gateway or Home Assistant with socat+io-homecontrol USB adapter → HA automation bridges KNX group addresses to io-homecontrol window commands; (2) Velux ACTIVE with NETATMO smart home system — includes indoor climate sensors, CO2 monitoring, and NETATMO Velux hub — integrates with HA via local NETATMO API, then bridges to KNX. Standard KNX integration via Home Assistant: KNX scene telegram (e.g., 'Night cooling' group address) → HA → Velux INTEGRA open 50% via io-homecontrol. Rain sensor WLS 200K broadcasts rain signal directly to all INTEGRA windows — overrides KNX command and closes windows immediately, without passing through the KNX bus.
In KNX panels, Velux integration is software-only via HA bridge — no panel hardware changes needed. Panel design: ensure 230V circuit for the KIX 300 gateway (or HA server). INTEGRA electric windows use 230V AC (Type K wiring in roof). Solar-powered INTEGRA (Type LSC/CVP) runs on solar charging — no mains wiring needed. Rain sensor WLS 200K is battery-powered. Panel design consideration: include a KNX binary output channel for the Velux KIX 300 'external input' — this allows KNX to trigger the KIX 300 without HA as middleware, providing a reliable fallback for rain/wind close commands.

Velux Rain Sensor WLS 200K
Battery-powered wireless rain sensor for io-homecontrol network. Mounts on roof or eaves. Triggers all registered INTEGRA windows to close within 90 seconds of rain detection — priority command that cannot be overridden by user commands until rain stops. For KNX: WLS 200K acts independently of KNX; also trigger KNX binary input via KIX 300 'rain status' output for KNX alert.
Velux KIX 300 Gateway
Ethernet gateway for Velux io-homecontrol network. Connects to local LAN and provides REST API for window control. Home Assistant Velux integration uses KIX 300 for local control of all INTEGRA windows. Rain sensor status, window position, battery status all available via API. Mount near router.
Velux Solar Roller Blind
Solar-powered blackout, translucent or dimming roller blind for Velux roof windows. io-homecontrol. No wiring. Integrates in same io-homecontrol network as windows — 'Bedtime' KNX scene → HA → all roof blinds close. Essential for summer heat reduction (reduces solar gain by up to 78%).

Is there a native KNX module for Velux windows?
No — Velux uses io-homecontrol protocol (868MHz), not KNX. Integration requires a gateway: Velux KIX 300 provides a REST API accessible from Home Assistant; HA then bridges to KNX group addresses. Alternatively, IntesisHome io-homecontrol-to-KNX gateways exist but are less common. The KIX 300 + HA approach is the most practical and widely deployed method for professional KNX integrations.
How does rain protection work with Velux and KNX?
The Velux rain sensor (WLS 200K) communicates directly with all INTEGRA windows via io-homecontrol — this is independent of KNX. When rain is detected, the WLS 200K broadcasts an emergency close command that overrides any KNX or manual command. The KIX 300 gateway also reports rain status via API, allowing HA to send a KNX alarm telegram — but this is notification-only; the window closing happens automatically via io-homecontrol, not via KNX.
Can Velux solar blinds be grouped with KNX room scenes?
Yes — via Home Assistant. KNX scene 3 ('Cinema') sends a telegram on group address 4/0/0 → HA automation detects scene 3 trigger → HA calls velux.close_cover for the roof blind entity → KIX 300 sends io-homecontrol close command to the solar blind. Response time: ~2–3 seconds (io-homecontrol is not instant). For time-critical scenes, chain the blind command with the lighting scene to allow the blind to close before cinema lighting activates.
