Warema

German external solar shading — venetian blinds, awnings and roller shutters fully integrated with KNX.

Warema (Tauberbischofsheim, Germany — founded 1955) is Germany's leading manufacturer of external sun protection: venetian blinds (Raffstore), roller shutters (Rolladen), awnings (Markisen), zip screens and pergolas. Their products are specified in premium residential and commercial construction across DACH and Benelux. For KNX integration, Warema offers the WMS (Warema Motor System) protocol with the WMS Bausatz KNX adapter — a DIN-rail interface that bridges WMS motor commands to KNX group addresses. All Warema ENS (Einbau-Netzschalter) tubular motors can be driven directly by any KNX blinds actuator via standard 230V UP/DOWN relay outputs without the WMS adapter.

Role in our panels

How we use Warema

Warema integrates with KNX at two levels: (1) Standard 230V relay control: any KNX 230V blinds actuator (MDT JAL-04UP, Hager TXA661B, ABB SA/M 4.16.5.1) can directly control Warema ENS motors via UP/DOWN relay outputs. Position tracking uses run-time calibration — the actuator measures travel time (e.g., 60 seconds for full open to close) and calculates 0–100% position as a percentage of travel time. Slat angle for venetian blinds is similarly calibrated. (2) WMS protocol control: Warema's proprietary 433 MHz radio protocol (WMS) allows precise position feedback and slat angle reporting from motors back to the KNX system. The WMS Bausatz KNX (Item No. 1002836) is a DIN-rail device that bridges WMS radio to KNX TP, providing position feedback, slat angle feedback, wind alarm integration and scene-based control. WMS is required for exact position feedback — standard relay control only estimates position from timing.

In PanelCraft panels, Warema integration is planned at the panel design stage: (1) Standard relay control (most projects): each Warema motor group (e.g., 'living room south facade') is wired to a KNX blinds relay output — typically 2 channels per motor (UP relay, DOWN relay). Panel wiring: 230V L+N+PE from the panel to each motor group terminal. MDT or Hager blinds actuator module provides the relay pairs. (2) WMS KNX adapter (premium projects with position feedback): Warema WMS Bausatz KNX mounted in the DIN panel. Single RS-485/RF cable to Warema WMS bridge antenna. KNX TP connection to actuator/gateway. The ETS6 parameter page for the MDT blinds actuator handles all travel time calibration, automatic reference run, wind alarm integration (from Elsner P04 weather station), and slat angle optimisation.

Used in these project types

German/Austrian residential new-build — Raffstore on south/west facades, KNX sun tracking via Elsner P04
Commercial office facades — Raffstore + automatic slat angle for DGNB/LEED glare compliance
Villas and premium homes — full facade shading + KNX scene integration (Cinema, Dinner, Summer)
Terrace automation — awning + outdoor lighting + outdoor heating on single KNX 'Terrace' scene
Apartment blocks — shared Warema motors per floor, KNX floor relay outputs from central panel

Warema products

Key components we install

ENS-RAFFSTOREExternal Venetian Blind

Warema Raffstore (Venetian Blind)

The premium external shading product. Aluminium horizontal slats with adjustable angle (0–90°). Provides glare reduction while maintaining view and natural light. South and west facade specification for solar gain control. Controlled by KNX blinds actuator via UP/DOWN relay — both position and slat angle as DPT 5.001 (0–100%). Common in DACH residential and office facade projects.

ENS-ROLLADENExternal Roller Shutter

Warema Rolladen (Roller Shutter)

Full blackout roller shutter in aluminium or insulating foam slats. North facade, bedroom blackout, security shutter applications. Single-axis control (position only, no slat angle). Highest wind resistance. Simple 2-relay KNX control. Common in new-build residential across Germany, Austria, Poland.

ENS-MARKISETerrace/Patio Awning

Warema Terrace Awning

Horizontal projection awning for terrace and south-facing rooms. Wind-sensitive — KNX wind alarm from Elsner P04 must retract awning above 45 km/h. KNX blinds actuator control. Pitch-adjustable arm types (P70/P80) allow variable sun angle coverage. Integrated heating wire option for frost protection.

WMS-KNXProtocol Adapter

Warema WMS Bausatz KNX

DIN-rail adapter that bridges Warema's proprietary 433 MHz WMS protocol to KNX TP. Enables exact motor position feedback (not estimated from timing), slat angle feedback, group scene control and wind alarm via WMS network. Required when exact position feedback is specified. Item No. 1002836.

ENS-SCREENExterior Roller Screen

Warema Zip Screen

Fabric zip-guided exterior screen for glass facades, winter gardens and large openings. Fabric options: openness factor 1–10% for sun/glare control with view, or blackout fabric for cinema rooms. Very high wind resistance vs awnings. KNX blinds actuator relay control, run-time calibrated.

Warema FAQ

Do I need the WMS KNX adapter or can I use a standard blinds actuator?

For most residential projects, a standard KNX blinds actuator (MDT, Hager, ABB) with 230V relay outputs is sufficient. The actuator calibrates travel time and estimates position — accurate to ±5% for shutters and ±10% for venetians. The WMS Bausatz KNX is required when: exact position feedback (±1%) is specified, the building management system needs to report actual shutter positions, or the installation has 20+ motors where position drift becomes significant without feedback correction.

How does automatic slat angle work with KNX?

Slat angle control uses DPT 5.001 (0–100%) as a second DPT channel on the KNX blinds actuator, separate from the position channel. The Elsner P04-KNX-GPS sends sun azimuth and elevation as DPT 9.001 group addresses. The KNX blinds actuator (or MDT logic block in ETS6) calculates the optimal slat angle based on sun elevation — at noon (high sun), slats close to near-horizontal; at low sun angles, slats open more to allow diffuse light while blocking direct sun. The calculation table is configured in ETS6 parameter pages.

What KNX blinds actuators work best with Warema?

Any certified KNX blinds actuator works — Warema ENS motors are standard 230V AC with direction relay input. Top recommendations: MDT JAL-04UP.02 (4-channel, excellent ETS6 parameters, integrated sun/wind logic, automatic reference run), Hager TXA661B (6-channel), ABB SA/M 4.16.5.1 (4-channel, German quality). All support travel time calibration, slat angle, scene storage and wind alarm input. MDT is most popular in DACH due to the detailed ETS6 parameter set for sun/wind automation.
