How we use Wilo

The Wilo Stratos MAXO is a high-efficiency circulator pump with IE5 ECM (electronically commutated motor) technology. Available in DN25 to DN50 with power range 0.04–1.5kW, the Stratos MAXO achieves EEI (Energy Efficiency Index) below 0.20 and is ErP 2015 Lot 11 compliant. AUTOADAPT function continuously self-adjusts the pump curve to match actual system hydraulics without manual setpoint configuration. The 3.5-inch LCD display provides on-device status and configuration. The built-in differential pressure sensor eliminates the need for external ΔP transducers — flow rate is calculated from the pump curve and ΔP measurement. The IF-Module (Modbus RTU communication module) slides into the GENIbus expansion slot on the Stratos MAXO pump head without tools. Wiring uses RS-485 A/B/GND terminals on the IF-Module — standard RS-485 3-wire connection to the KNX/Modbus gateway. Modbus address is set via the pump display menu (Extras → Communication → Modbus address, range 1–31). Baud rate is fixed at 9600 baud, 8N1 configuration. For RS-485 bus termination, enable the termination resistor on the last device (120Ω via DIP switch on the IF-Module) when the Stratos MAXO is at the physical end of the RS-485 cable run. The Stratos MAXO Modbus register map provides comprehensive operational data: R1 = setpoint 0–100%, R3 = actual speed in RPM, R5 = current power consumption in W, R7 = differential pressure in kPa, R9 = calculated flow in l/h, R100 = alarm word (bitmask for fault types: overheat, blocked rotor, dry run, communication fault), R200 = cumulative energy counter in kWh. Write registers allow Modbus master control of pump setpoint when the pump is in Remote mode (set via display: Extras → Operating mode → Remote). The MDT SCN-MODBUS.01 KNX/Modbus gateway (RS-485 master, up to 31 slaves, 9600 baud) maps Stratos MAXO registers to KNX group addresses via a signal table configured in ETS6. Typical KNX GA assignments: power consumption (DPT 9.001 2-byte float, kW) for BREEAM energy sub-metering, actual speed percentage (DPT 5.001) for BMS display, fault status (DPT 1.001) for maintenance alarm, and cumulative energy (DPT 13.010 4-byte signed, kWh) for energy dashboard. Predictive maintenance logic in ETS6 or Gira HomeServer triggers a KNX alarm when pump power exceeds nominal by 15% — indicating bearing wear or flow restriction requiring service.

Wilo Stratos MAXO vs Grundfos MAGNA3 for KNX integration?

Both use Modbus RTU via a slide-in communication module (Wilo IF-Module vs Grundfos CIM 150). The integration chain to KNX is identical: RS-485 → MDT SCN-MODBUS.01 or Intesis gateway → KNX group addresses. The key difference is protocol options: MAGNA3 also supports Modbus TCP (CIM 200 module) and GENIbus; Stratos MAXO is Modbus RTU only (RS-485, no TCP). For BMS projects requiring Modbus TCP over Ethernet backbone, Grundfos MAGNA3 + CIM 200 has an advantage. For standard RS-485 Modbus RTU projects, Stratos MAXO is competitively priced and technically equivalent. IE5 motor efficiency is identical in both.

Can AUTOADAPT and Modbus remote control coexist on the Stratos MAXO?

Yes, with configuration. Enable Remote mode on the pump display (Extras → Operating mode → Remote) to allow Modbus setpoint write commands from the KNX gateway. In Remote mode, AUTOADAPT continues to operate within the boundaries of the Modbus-commanded setpoint — it optimises hydraulic behaviour around the commanded set point rather than disabling entirely. If Modbus communication is lost (cable fault, gateway restart), the pump falls back to the last commanded setpoint (configurable) or to a fixed fallback setpoint — configure the fallback behaviour in the pump display under Communication → Fallback.

How many Wilo Stratos MAXO pumps can be connected to one RS-485 bus?

Up to 31 Stratos MAXO pumps per RS-485 bus segment (Modbus addresses 1–31, 9600 baud). Maximum cable length is 1200m total for the RS-485 bus at 9600 baud with 0.5mm2 shielded twisted-pair cable. Enable the 120Ω termination resistor (DIP switch on IF-Module) only on the last pump on the bus and on the KNX gateway RS-485 port — do not terminate intermediate devices. Connect the cable shield to ground at one end only to avoid ground loops.
