Door & window sensors

Door & window sensors use a magnetic reed switch to detect when a door or window opens and report the state to an alarm panel or smart-home hub.

The sensor pairs a battery-powered transmitter with a small magnet mounted on the moving leaf; when the gap between the two exceeds a few millimetres the contact opens and an alert fires within seconds. Most models run on Wi-Fi or Zigbee 3.0, with Zigbee needing a hub but drawing less power from the CR2032 cell.

  • Wireless protocol — Wi-Fi connects directly to the router without a hub, Zigbee 3.0 needs a coordinator but extends battery life to 1–2 years
  • Mounting gap — check the maximum sensor-to-magnet distance (typically 15–20 mm) against the door or window frame gap
  • Ingress protection — IP66-rated multi-sensors handle outdoor gates and garages, standard models are indoor-only
