Only KNX is an open standard

KNX is defined by ISO/IEC 14543-3 (EN 50090) with certified interoperability across hundreds of manufacturers. Loxone and Larnitech are both single-vendor platforms — capable, but not built to the same open-standard rulebook.

Openness & interoperability

KNX devices from different certified manufacturers are built to interoperate. Loxone and Larnitech are proprietary ecosystems — Loxone bridges out via gateways, Larnitech via third-party hubs such as 1Home, but that's an integration layer, not a shared certification standard.

Engineering & commissioning tool

KNX is configured in ETS, a dedicated professional tool. Loxone is configured in its own Miniserver software. Larnitech has no separate ETS-like step at all — setup runs through the Larnitech app on a tablet, without programming skills.

Bus and hardware topology

KNX runs on a TP twisted-pair bus at roughly 29V (also available over RF and IP). Loxone uses its Tree/Air topology around the Miniserver. Larnitech uses its own CAN bus — CAN High/CAN Low over WAGO-type terminals, wired linearly with termination at both ends of the Main Gateway.

Loxone bridges to KNX and other systems through its own gateways, and third-party hubs such as 1Home can bring Larnitech and KNX into one control app. But that's an integration layer sitting on top of two (or three) separate systems, not a shared standard — plan the wiring and commissioning for each system independently.

Which platform carries the lowest long-term risk if the integrator changes?

KNX. Because it's an open ISO/IEC 14543-3 standard with certified multi-vendor interoperability, any certified integrator can take over servicing later. Loxone and Larnitech installations stay tied to their respective ecosystems.
