M-Bus vs Modbus: Two Different Standards, Not One Family
M-Bus and Modbus share a syllable, not a specification. One is a European standard built specifically for utility metering; the other is a general-purpose industrial fieldbus used across a much wider range of equipment.
How to tell them apart on a real project
Check what the device is for
If it's purpose-built for reading a heat, water, gas or electricity meter, it very likely speaks M-Bus, standardized as EN 13757.
Check what the device actually is
If it's a VFD, PLC, solar inverter or general automation component that happens to report energy data, expect Modbus (RTU or TCP), not M-Bus.
Look for two data sheets, not one
Some meters expose both an M-Bus and a Modbus interface. Read the device documentation carefully - the two outputs are separate features, not the same protocol renamed.
Plan for a gateway if you need to mix them
Where M-Bus/wM-Bus meters must feed a Modbus or BACnet-based BMS, a dedicated gateway converts between the two - they are not interoperable without one.
What actually separates M-Bus from Modbus
A standard built for one job
M-Bus is standardized as EN 13757 specifically for reading utility meters. Modbus is a general industrial fieldbus, originally from Modicon, now used across VFDs, PLCs, inverters and countless other device types - metering is just one of many things it carries.
Different origin, different purpose
M-Bus (EN 13757) was developed specifically for remote utility metering - heat, water, gas, electricity. Modbus was developed as a general industrial communication protocol and later adapted to carry metering data among many other things.
Different wiring philosophy
Wired M-Bus uses a simple two-wire, low-voltage, polarity-free bus - the master powers the bus (typically around 36V) and slaves reply by current modulation, keeping meter hardware cheap and simple.
Different addressing model
M-Bus devices use primary addressing (1-250 per bus) or secondary addressing via an 8-digit ID built from manufacturer code, serial number, version and medium - useful for meter replacement without re-addressing.
M-Bus has its own wireless variant
wireless M-Bus (wM-Bus), standardized as EN 13757-4, operates at 868 MHz in the EU with S, T and C communication modes for battery-powered meters. Modbus has no equivalent wireless-metering standard of its own.
Gateways bridge them, they don't merge them
Gateways exist that convert M-Bus/wM-Bus meter data into Modbus or BACnet so it can reach a BMS or KNX system - but that conversion is exactly why the two remain distinct protocols underneath.
