DMX512 Fundamentals: Universes, Channels, Addressing
DMX512 (ANSI E1.11) is the RS-485 backbone behind stage, architectural and dynamic scene lighting. Get the universe math, addressing logic and wiring discipline right before the first fixture goes on the line.
How a DMX512 line is planned
One universe, 512 channels
Each universe carries 512 channels, and every channel holds a value from 0-255 controlling one parameter — brightness, a colour channel, position or similar.
Address each fixture
A fixture occupies a block of channels starting at its configured start address. Plan the address map first so fixtures on the same universe never overlap.
Wire it as a daisy-chain
The physical layer is RS-485 at 250 kbit/s, wired device-to-device in a daisy-chain — never a star — with a 120-ohm terminator at the very end of the line.
Budget the segment
A data-link segment supports a maximum of 32 unit loads, a standardised RS-485 receiver load rather than a literal fixture count, before a splitter or repeater is required.

5-pin XLR, but expect 3-pin
ANSI E1.11 specifies a 5-pin XLR connector for compliant equipment. In practice, 3-pin XLR is extremely common on entertainment lighting gear — not compliant with the standard, but what you'll often actually find on site.
RDM for discovery, not just control
RDM (ANSI E1.20) runs on the same physical line as DMX512, adding two-way device discovery and remote addressing, and stays backward-compatible with plain DMX512 receivers sharing that line.
Art-Net over Ethernet — widely used, not official
Art-Net carries DMX universes over Ethernet/UDP and is the de-facto standard from Artistic Licence, adopted across the industry — but it is not an official ANSI or ESTA standard.
sACN where you need the official IP standard
sACN (Streaming ACN, ANSI E1.31) is the official ANSI/ESTA standard for carrying DMX-like data over IP, with native multicast support for larger, networked installations.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a universe and a channel?
A universe is one DMX512 data stream carrying up to 512 channels. Each channel is a single 0-255 value controlling one parameter on one fixture — a fixture typically uses several consecutive channels.
Why daisy-chain instead of star wiring, and why the terminator?
DMX512's RS-485 physical layer is designed for a single line running device-to-device. A star topology reflects and corrupts the signal; a 120-ohm terminator at the far end of the line absorbs it instead.
Does the 32 unit-load limit mean I can only wire 32 fixtures?
No. A unit load is a standardised RS-485 receiver load, not a literal fixture count — some fixtures draw more than one unit load. Once a segment's unit-load budget is used up, a splitter or repeater starts a fresh segment.
Is DMX512 the same protocol as DALI?
No. DALI is designed for standardised control of building lighting ballasts and drivers — brightness and dimming. DMX512 targets dynamic, scenic lighting control with many channels per fixture, used on stage, facades and increasingly premium interiors. They are not interchangeable, and we spec them differently.
