How to decide in four steps
Define the lighting job
Standard building lighting — offices, corridors, general fixtures that need switching, dimming and grouping into scenes — points to DALI. Dynamic, fast-changing, per-channel effects point to DMX512.
Count the channels per fixture
DALI addresses a driver as one controllable unit for brightness. DMX512 gives you up to 512 channels per universe, often several per fixture for colour, position or effects — that's the real fork in the road.
Check the physical layer
DMX512 runs on RS-485 at 250 kbit/s, daisy-chained with a 120-ohm terminator at the end of the line, up to 32 unit loads per segment before a splitter is needed. DALI has its own bus and addressing scheme, built for building-scale driver control rather than scenic lighting.
Don't force one system across the whole site

ANSI E1.11 specifies a 5-pin XLR connector for compliant equipment. In practice, 3-pin XLR is very common on entertainment lighting gear — it isn't standard-compliant, but it's what installers frequently find on site.
RDM adds two-way management
RDM (ANSI E1.20) runs on the same DMX512 line and adds discovery and addressing without manual DIP-switch configuration per fixture. It stays backward-compatible with plain, non-RDM receivers on the same line.
DMX over IP: Art-Net and sACN
Universes can travel over Ethernet instead of direct RS-485. Art-Net is a widely adopted de-facto protocol from Artistic Licence, not an official ANSI or ESTA standard. sACN (ANSI E1.31) is the official standard and supports multicast for larger, centrally managed installations.
