Segment the line

DMX512 runs as a daisy-chain over RS-485, not a star — each segment carries up to 32 unit loads before signal integrity degrades, so more fixtures mean another segment, not a longer cable.

Add a splitter/repeater

A DIN-rail DMX splitter re-buffers the signal onto several isolated output lines, letting one control point drive multiple 32-unit-load segments. Optically isolated splitters also stop a fault on one line reaching the others.

Keep power and signal apart

DMX512 itself carries only data, not fixture power — signal wiring and driver/fixture supply runs should be routed, labelled and terminated separately in the panel, not bundled as one circuit.

Terminate the line end

A 120-ohm terminator belongs at the physical end of each daisy-chain segment only — one per segment, not one per fixture — to stop reflections corrupting the signal.

32 unit loads per segment

A unit load is a standardised RS-485 receiver load, not a literal device count — some fixtures draw more than one, so segment planning needs real load figures, not just a fixture tally.

5-pin XLR is the standard; 3-pin is what you'll often meet

ANSI E1.11 specifies 5-pin XLR connectors. 3-pin XLR is common on entertainment-lighting gear in the field — it isn't standard-compliant, but installers should expect to encounter it.

RDM rides the same line

RDM (ANSI E1.20) adds two-way discovery and addressing over the existing DMX512 wiring, and stays backward-compatible with plain DMX512 receivers on the same segment — no separate cabling needed.

Art-Net and sACN move universes over IP

For many universes across a building or facade, Art-Net (a widely used de-facto protocol, not an official ANSI/ESTA standard) or sACN (ANSI E1.31, the official standard with multicast) carry DMX data over Ethernet instead of RS-485.

Facade and outdoor runs need the same bus discipline

Exposed low-voltage runs on a facade follow the same general surge and cable-management discipline as any other outdoor bus wiring — segment, protect and document the run rather than treating it as an indoor cable.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a terminator at every DMX fixture?

No — only one 120-ohm terminator at the physical end of each daisy-chain segment. Terminating mid-line or at every fixture degrades the signal instead of protecting it.

How many fixtures can one DMX512 line carry?

The standard limits a segment to 32 unit loads, not a fixed fixture count — some fixtures present more than one unit load, so the real number depends on the equipment. Beyond that limit, a splitter/repeater adds another segment.

Is DMX512 the same as DALI?

No. DMX512 and DALI are different protocols for different jobs — DMX512 handles fast, many-channel scenic and dynamic lighting control, while DALI addresses building lighting ballasts and drivers for standard brightness/dimming. They call for different panel wiring conventions and shouldn't be mixed on the same line.

Can I run DMX over the building's IP network instead of RS-485?

Yes, via Art-Net or sACN. Art-Net is a widely adopted de-facto protocol from Artistic Licence, not an official ANSI/ESTA standard; sACN (ANSI E1.31) is the official standard and supports multicast, which helps on larger IP networks.

Why does the connector on site not match the 5-pin standard?

ANSI E1.11 specifies 5-pin XLR, but 3-pin XLR is extremely common on entertainment-lighting equipment in practice. It isn't standard-compliant, but installers should expect to meet it and plan adapters or panel terminations accordingly.
