RDM Discovery and Commissioning on a DMX512 Line
RDM (ANSI E1.20) adds bidirectional discovery and addressing to a DMX512 line, so a controller can find, check and address every RDM-capable fixture without a technician walking the rig to set DIP switches.
How RDM commissioning works
Run discovery
Trigger RDM discovery from the controller or console; every RDM-capable device on the line responds with its unique ID over the same RS-485 wiring used for DMX512.
Verify status
Check that each discovered fixture reports back correctly -- personality, current address, sensor or lamp status -- before touching any address.
Set and confirm addresses
Assign or confirm start addresses remotely through RDM instead of visiting every fixture, then re-poll to confirm the change was accepted.
Document and test playback
Record the final address map for handover, then confirm plain DMX512 playback still runs correctly for any non-RDM fixtures sharing the same line.
What RDM changes on site
One line, two directions
RDM rides the same RS-485 wiring as DMX512 and adds a return channel for discovery, status and addressing.
Bidirectional on existing wiring
RDM uses the same physical DMX512 line -- no separate data cable, just a controller and fixtures that support the protocol.
No manual DIP-switch walk
Addresses are read and set from the controller, replacing a fixture-by-fixture walk with local menus or switches.
Backward-compatible with plain DMX512
RDM is designed to coexist with non-RDM receivers on the same line -- a mixed line of RDM and plain DMX512 fixtures is normal, not a fault condition.
Status visibility before showtime
Discovery reports which fixtures are actually present and responding, catching a dead or unaddressed unit during commissioning rather than during a show.
Physical layer unchanged
Daisy-chain topology and the 120-ohm end-of-line terminator still apply -- RDM changes what travels on the line, not how the line is wired.

Frequently asked questions
What is RDM?
RDM (Remote Device Management, ANSI E1.20) is a standard that adds bidirectional communication to a DMX512 line, letting a controller discover, query and address fixtures. It is backward-compatible with plain (non-RDM) DMX512 receivers on the same line.
Will RDM fixtures interfere with my existing plain DMX512 fixtures?
No. RDM is built to run alongside non-RDM receivers on the same RS-485 line, so a mixed installation is a normal, supported configuration, not something to avoid.
Does RDM change how the line is wired?
No. It still runs on RS-485, daisy-chain topology, with a 120-ohm terminator at the end of the line and the same 32-unit-load limit per segment before a splitter is needed.
Is RDM the same as Art-Net or sACN?
No. RDM works on the direct RS-485 DMX512 line, while Art-Net and sACN (ANSI E1.31) carry DMX universes over Ethernet/IP -- different physical layer, different job.
What connector should I expect on site?
ANSI E1.11 specifies 5-pin XLR for compliant equipment, but 3-pin XLR is very common in practice on entertainment lighting gear -- plan for it even though it is not the standard connector.
