Frequently asked questions
Can a Hikvision camera trigger an external relay or siren directly?
Yes, on models with alarm output terminals — the output closes on a configured trigger such as motion or AcuSense detection, and can drive a relay, siren or similar external device. Which triggers and outputs are available depends on the model, so the datasheet needs checking case by case.
Does ONVIF give full AcuSense functionality to a non-Hikvision VMS?
No. ONVIF provides basic video-stream and event interoperability with third-party VMS or access-control software. AcuSense-level filtering detail is normally only fully available inside the Hikvision ecosystem — Hikvision NVR paired with Hikvision cameras.
Can a Hikvision NVR forward events to a building-automation or KNX system?

What's the difference between staying Hikvision-native and using a third-party VMS?
Staying inside Hikvision NVR + Hikvision cameras keeps full AcuSense-level event detail. A third-party VMS with an ONVIF or Hikvision SDK driver can bridge Hikvision video into a mixed-brand system, but typically with a narrower event set than the native ecosystem.
How long is footage retained after an alarm-triggered recording?
Retention always depends on configuration — resolution, bitrate, compression and motion-detection settings against the installed storage capacity. There's no fixed figure; each installation's datasheet and storage sizing determines it.
