Cisco/Meraki, MikroTik, and Ubiquiti/UniFi solve the same networking problems with different cost, control, and support tradeoffs -- we help you match the platform to the project, not the other way around.

Enterprise depth vs configuration flexibility

Cisco's Catalyst line and MikroTik's RouterOS sit at opposite ends of the same spectrum -- deep enterprise feature sets and support structure on one side, maximum configuration flexibility and lower cost on the other.

Cloud-managed vs CLI-managed vs local controller

Meraki manages hardware centrally through a cloud dashboard; Cisco IOS/IOS-XE and MikroTik RouterOS are configured primarily through CLI; UniFi (a separate brand we'll cover in a future guide) uses its own local controller model.

Licensing model matters as much as hardware cost

Meraki requires an active licence to keep working, and newer Catalyst switches increasingly use DNA subscription tiers for software features -- budget for the ongoing cost, not just the initial purchase.

Two tiers inside Cisco itself

Cisco Business (CBS series) is Cisco's own simpler, lower-cost line for SMB projects that don't need full Catalyst complexity -- worth considering before jumping straight to the flagship line.

Standards-based fundamentals across all three

VLAN tagging (802.1Q) and trunk ports work on the same industry-standard principles whichever platform you choose -- what differs is how you configure and manage them, not the underlying networking logic.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cisco/Meraki always the 'better' choice?

No -- it's the better choice for projects that need deep enterprise support, standardized documentation, or centralized multi-site management, and can absorb the higher cost and, for Meraki, a mandatory subscription. For simpler or budget-driven projects it can be overkill.

Does Meraki really require an ongoing subscription?

Yes -- Meraki hardware needs an active licence to keep working through its cloud dashboard; it isn't a one-time purchase like a traditional switch. Factor that into the total cost of ownership before choosing it, and check current Cisco/Meraki pricing for the specific licence tier.

Is MikroTik enterprise-grade?

MikroTik's RouterOS gives serious configuration flexibility and a much lower entry cost, but there's no formal Cisco-style enterprise support tier and the learning curve is steeper -- it fits projects where in-house or partner RouterOS expertise is available. What about Ubiquiti/UniFi?

UniFi is a well-known prosumer/SMB networking brand with its own local controller model, and it's the third platform in this comparison series -- we're preparing a detailed UniFi guide next, so for now we cover it only in general terms here.

Can a project mix these platforms?

Sometimes, yes -- for example Meraki at the edge with a different core, or MikroTik alongside Cisco Business switches. It depends on the specific requirements, which is exactly what a platform assessment is for.
