Structured cabling, KNX bus, and fieldbus wiring all come down to the same twisted-pair fundamentals -- but the wrong shielding or conductor choice costs you a callback. Here's how our engineers pick between UTP, FTP, STP, Cat5e, Cat6, LiYCY and RS-485 pairs on real installs.
How to choose the right cable for the run
Identify the signal
Structured network link, KNX bus segment, RS-485/Modbus fieldbus, or a sensor/actuator drop each call for a different cable family and connector strategy.
Check the EMI exposure
Runs alongside power cables, motors, drives or frequency converters push you toward a shielded option (FTP, STP, shielded LiYCY); a clean, low-noise route can stay on plain UTP.
Pick solid or stranded
Solid conductors terminate reliably in fixed wall and trunking runs; stranded (litz) conductors flex without fatigue, so they belong in patch cords and anywhere the cable moves.
Confirm category and fire rating
Match Cat5e or Cat6 to the bandwidth the project actually needs, and check whether the building or route requires LSZH or fire-rated cable before you order.
What actually decides the right cable
The grounding caveat nobody skips twice
A shield only helps if it's bonded correctly -- usually at one end only, per the system vendor's instructions. Ground it at both ends without a proper design and you can introduce a ground loop that makes interference worse, not better.
UTP vs FTP vs STP
Unshielded UTP is fine for most office and home runs kept away from power cabling; FTP (overall foil) and STP (per-pair or braided screen) earn their cost in electrically noisy plant rooms, near motors and VFDs, or on longer runs.
Cat5e vs Cat6
Both are twisted-pair Ethernet cable; Cat6 gives more headroom for future bandwidth and longer channel lengths. Confirm actual throughput and distance limits against the cable datasheet and the relevant TIA/ISO standard, not a rule of thumb.
KNX bus cable (J-Y(St)Y)
The green KNX bus cable, standard designation J-Y(St)Y, is a dedicated twisted-pair with its own topology and termination rules -- treat it as bus cable, not spare network cable, even though it looks similar.
Shielded control cable LiYCY
LiYCY is the flexible, shielded go-to for sensor and actuator wiring in panels and machinery, where movement and nearby power/drive cabling both apply.
RS-485 / Modbus pairs
Industrial and building-automation fieldbus runs on twisted pairs too -- shielding and correct termination matter as much as the cable itself for a clean, error-free bus.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need shielded cable (FTP/STP) for a KNX installation?
Not always -- it depends on how close the bus run travels to power cables, motors or drives. In a clean residential run, unshielded twisted pair can be fine; in a plant room or alongside three-phase power, shielded cable and correct grounding earn their keep. Check the KNX Association's cabling guidance for the specific case.
Can I mix Cat5e and Cat6 cable on the same link?
You can, but the link only performs to the level of its weakest component -- patch cords, jacks and the cable itself. If you need Cat6 performance, keep every element of the channel at Cat6 or better.
Should I use solid or stranded conductors for a patch cable?
Stranded. Patch cords get flexed and re-plugged repeatedly, and stranded conductors tolerate that far better than solid. Solid conductors are for fixed, permanent runs terminated once and left alone.
Does a cable shield need to be grounded at both ends?
Usually not -- most systems call for a single grounding point, per the vendor's instructions, to avoid a ground loop. Grounding both ends without a deliberate design can make interference worse rather than better.
Can data cable share a conduit with power cable?
It's better avoided. Running data and power separately, or with adequate separation, reduces interference risk and keeps future changes to either system simpler. Follow your project's routing rules and conduit-fill practice for the specifics.
