How wiring documentation gets built, step by step
Map rooms to loads
Before anything else, every room gets mapped against what it actually needs -- lighting points, socket outlets, and any high-power equipment such as an oven, hob, EV charger or heat pump.
Group points into circuits
Lighting is kept on separate circuits from sockets, and high-power appliances typically get their own dedicated circuit -- the exact circuit count, breaker rating and RCD type is always confirmed by a certified electrician against the real load and applicable national wiring rules, never a fixed number.
Build the consumer unit schedule
A circuit schedule lists every circuit, what it serves, and where it sits in the board -- including spare ways sized to the specific project and enclosure, not a universal figure, for future additions.
Plan and separate the routes
Cable routes and conduits are planned for manufacturer-specified bend radius and sensible fill, with power and low-voltage/data runs (KNX, UTP) kept on separate routes to avoid interference.
What makes wiring documentation actually useful later
The one drawing that has to stay honest
The original design drawing shows intent; the as-built drawing shows what actually got installed, including every on-site change. Only the second one is worth trusting during a fault-find or an extension years later.
Consumer unit / circuit schedule
A living document listing every circuit, its location and purpose, and the spare ways available for expansion -- updated whenever a circuit changes, not filed away after handover.
Circuit separation logic
Lighting separated from sockets, and dedicated circuits reserved for high-power loads like ovens, EV chargers, heat pumps or saunas -- the reasoning, not a specific amperage, is what belongs on this page.
Power and data routed apart
Mains cabling and low-voltage/data cabling (KNX, UTP) are routed on separate paths wherever practical, reducing interference risk and keeping future changes to either system independent.
Spare conduits for future automation
An empty conduit or a spare KNX/UTP run left during first-fix is a cheap decision on paper and an expensive, disruptive one to add after the walls are finished.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a design drawing and an as-built drawing?
The design drawing shows the original plan; the as-built drawing (and the updated circuit schedule) reflects everything actually installed, including on-site changes. Only the as-built version should be trusted for future fault-finding or extension work.
How many spare ways should I leave in the consumer unit?
There's no universal number -- it depends on the project, the board size, and how much future expansion is realistically planned. A certified electrician sizes this against the specific installation and the applicable national wiring rules.
