Home Assistant Core is open source and runs locally on the client's own network — the automation logic isn't tied to one vendor's cloud or roadmap.

Frequently asked questions

Is Home Assistant certified for commercial building automation?

No — it's an open-source project maintained by Nabu Casa and the community, not a certified BMS product. If your project needs formal certification and a vendor support contract, a closed commercial platform may be the better fit; we'll tell you honestly which case yours is.

What happens when Home Assistant releases a breaking update?

Core updates land roughly monthly and can include breaking changes, which is why we read release notes before updating and keep a tested backup. We agree an update schedule with the client rather than auto-updating a live installation.

Does Home Assistant replace our KNX or Modbus controller logic?

No. HA sits on top as a visualisation and automation layer — it reads and writes over the bus via the KNX or Modbus integration, but the bus system keeps its own controller logic. We treat it as an addition, not a replacement.

Zigbee via ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT — which do you use?

Both are valid and neither is universally better; it depends on the specific devices and the level of control you need. We choose per project based on device support and how much configuration complexity the client wants to own.

Who supports the system after handover?

That's a decision we make explicitly during scoping — either your own team takes on updates and monitoring with our documentation, or we agree an ongoing support arrangement. We won't leave you with an undocumented system.
