Map the site, pick the camera type

Walk the positions and match camera type to the job: bullet for a visible exterior deterrent with a clear line of sight, dome/turret where a discreet, hard-to-orient camera suits interiors and entrances, PTZ where a site needs active remote pan-tilt-zoom coverage rather than fixed framing.

Decide IP+PoE or Turbo HD

If the building already has coax from a legacy analog system, Turbo HD (Hikvision's HD-TVI technology) delivers high-resolution video over that existing cable — a faster retrofit than pulling new Ethernet. A new install, or a site wanting the full feature set, runs IP cameras over PoE instead.

Size the NVR to the job

Match NVR PoE port count and channel count to the number of cameras, with headroom for planned expansion — an 8-camera site on a 4-port NVR is a rework waiting to happen. Exact storage retention depends on configuration (resolution, bitrate, compression, motion settings, drive capacity) — check the specific model's datasheet rather than quoting a day count upfront.

Scope the interoperability honestly

Hikvision IP cameras and NVRs generally support ONVIF, which covers basic video-stream interoperability with another brand's VMS or NVR. AcuSense-level analytics — the deep-learning human/vehicle filtering — typically need the Hikvision NVR and Hikvision cameras working together end to end, not just any ONVIF-compliant device.

Two cabling paths, one decision

IP+PoE for new structured cabling and the full feature set; Turbo HD/HD-TVI to reuse existing coax on a retrofit. The right call depends on what's already in the wall, not brand preference.

Camera type by position

Bullet cameras are visible and directional — useful as a deterrent outdoors. Dome/turret cameras are more discreet and harder to read from outside, suited to entrances and interiors. PTZ adds remote pan-tilt-zoom for actively monitored larger sites, though it's less common on residential work.

IP/PoE vs Turbo HD/HD-TVI

IP cameras over PoE carry data and power on one Ethernet run and unlock the full feature set. Turbo HD/HD-TVI reuses existing coax from an older analog system, which can be the faster and cheaper path on a retrofit where re-cabling isn't practical.

AcuSense filtering

AcuSense applies deep-learning detection on the camera or NVR to distinguish people and vehicles from other motion — tree branches, animals, headlight sweeps, shadows — cutting the false-alarm volume that plain motion detection produces.

ColorVu and DarkFighter imaging

ColorVu keeps footage in colour rather than switching to black-and-white IR at night, using a more sensitive sensor and/or supplementary light. DarkFighter, on the models that carry it, improves low-light visibility with lower image noise.

Hik-Connect and iVMS-4200

Hik-Connect is the mobile app and P2P cloud service for remote viewing without router port-forwarding. iVMS-4200 is the free desktop VMS for managing multiple cameras or NVRs, searching recordings and exporting footage — typically the tool of choice on larger or more professional installs.

How many PoE ports does the NVR need?

How many days of footage can we store?

Does ONVIF let us mix Hikvision cameras with another brand's NVR?

For basic video streaming, generally yes. For AcuSense-level analytics — human/vehicle filtering — you typically need Hikvision cameras and a Hikvision NVR working together; third-party ONVIF hardware won't reproduce that feature set.
