Before a Safire camera goes on the wall, the cable plant and the power budget decide whether the install is clean or a callback waiting to happen. This is how we plan the cabling topology and the PoE load — including when it's honest to reuse existing coax instead of re-cabling everything to IP.

Survey the existing plant

We check what's already in the walls — coax runs of unknown or mixed standard, spare conduit, or a blank slate — before deciding on topology.

Choose structured cabling or coax reuse

New runs get Cat6/Cat6a home-runs per camera; existing coax can often stay in service behind a Safire 5-in-1 XVR instead of a full re-cable.

We sum the camera count and draw class against the NVR's or switch's rated PoE budget, always checked against the specific model's datasheet.

Honest about ONVIF's limits

Safire IP gear generally supports ONVIF for basic video-stream interoperability, but the full Safire Control Center feature set is built for Safire NVR/XVR plus Safire cameras, not any ONVIF box on the market.

Can we keep our existing coax cabling instead of pulling new Cat6?

Often yes. Safire's XVR is a '5-in-1' recorder that accepts HDTVI, HDCVI, AHD, CVBS or IP on the same box, so an existing coax plant of uncertain or mixed standard can usually stay in service. The trade-off is honest: the full Safire Control Center ecosystem is wider on IP.

How much PoE power do we need to budget per camera?

It depends on the specific camera and NVR/switch models — we don't quote a blanket wattage figure. Always check the rated PoE budget on the datasheet of the exact hardware in use before finalising camera count.

How long is footage kept on a Safire recorder?

Retention depends on configuration — resolution, bitrate, compression, motion-detection settings and installed HDD capacity all change the number. There's no fixed figure; it's calculated per project against the chosen model's specification.

Does ONVIF mean we can mix Safire with another brand's NVR?

ONVIF gives basic video-stream interoperability between manufacturers, which is genuinely useful. But the full feature set of the Safire ecosystem, including Safire Control Center, is designed around Safire NVR/XVR paired with Safire cameras.

What does the labelling and documentation cover at handover?

Every cable run, patch port and DIN-rail position is labelled to a consistent scheme in line with IEC 61439-style panel discipline, so the next electrician on site can read the installation without guesswork.
