Inventory every powered device
List every AP, camera, IP phone and other PoE-powered device the network will carry — for the final rollout, not just what goes in on day one.
Match each device to its PoE class
802.3af, 802.3at (PoE+) and 802.3bt (PoE++) each raise the power ceiling a port can deliver — but the device (PD) only draws what it actually needs, never the full class automatically.
Total the draw against the switch's power budget
A switch's overall PoE budget is a separate number from any single port's class support — we check the manufacturer's datasheet for the switch's total budget, not just its per-port maximum.
Build in headroom for what comes next
Sizing to day-one device count only means the budget quietly runs out the moment someone adds one more camera or AP later — we plan against the expected final count instead.
What the PoE budget concept actually covers
One shared budget, many ports
A switch's total PoE power budget is consumed by every active port together — a device can meet its port's class and still get refused power if the switch's overall budget is already spent.
PSE and PD roles, clearly separated
The switch or injector (PSE) sources the power; the camera, AP or phone (PD) is the powered device drawing it — mixing up which side does what is where planning mistakes start.
Classes set a ceiling, not a guarantee
802.3af/at/bt tell you what a port CAN supply — the actual power delivered depends on the specific device, which is why we always check its datasheet rather than assume the class number.
Mixed-device networks, not just cameras
Access points, IP phones, IoT sensors and cameras typically share the same switch and the same power budget — we size for the whole mix, not one device category in isolation.
No invented numbers
We won't quote a wattage-per-port, a price or a specific switch model without the datasheet in front of us — PoE budgets are equipment- and project-specific by nature.

Frequently asked questions
Is a PoE class the same as a switch's power budget?
No. The class (802.3af/at/bt) sets what a single port can deliver; the switch's total power budget is a separate, shared limit across all its active PoE ports — both have to be checked.
Does a device always draw the full wattage of its PoE class?
No — the powered device (PD) only draws what it actually needs. A class only sets the ceiling a port can supply, not what gets consumed.
What happens if I add devices later without re-checking the budget?
Existing devices keep working, but the new one may simply fail to power up once the switch's total budget is exhausted — it's a silent failure, not an error message.
Does PoE budgeting require a managed switch?
Not inherently — PoE power budget is a separate concern from managed/unmanaged switching. VLAN segmentation needs a managed switch; power budgeting applies to any PoE-capable switch.
