Cable Types for Smart-Home and Panel Installations
Five cable families cover almost everything you'll pull in a smart-home or panel job — power, data/bus, coax and fiber. Picking the right one is about construction and application, not a number on a spec sheet.
How to pick the right cable, in four steps
Separate by function first
Decide whether the run carries power, data/bus signalling, or RF/video before you touch a cross-section chart — power and data cable are built for different jobs and are not interchangeable.
Match construction to movement
Solid conductors terminate cleanly in screw and WAGO-style terminals and suit fixed runs in walls and conduit; stranded conductors flex without fatigue and belong wherever the cable moves — patch leads, trunking with movement, mobile equipment.
Add shielding only where it earns its keep
FTP, STP or shielded LiYCY protect data signals from EMI near motors, drives and power cabling; UTP is fine for straightforward runs away from noise. A shield only helps if it's grounded correctly — usually at one end, per the system manufacturer's instructions.
Route power and data apart, then check the rules
Keep power and low-voltage/data cabling in separate channels or with adequate separation, and confirm fire-rated or LSZH cable isn't required for your building category before you order.
The five families, and what each one is actually for
real cable families, not one universal wire
Power/installation, data/bus, coax, fiber and fire-rated/LSZH cable each solve a different problem — treating them as interchangeable is where installations go wrong.
Power/installation cable
NYM-type PVC installation cable in the common DIY/installation cross-section tiers — 1.5/2.5/4/6/10 mm². These are size tiers, not amp ratings: current-carrying capacity always depends on installation method, ambient temperature, bundling and national wiring rules — check the datasheet and a certified electrician.
Data/bus cable
Twisted-pair UTP/FTP/STP in Cat5e/Cat6 for structured data; KNX bus cable (typically green, marked J-Y(St)Y) for building bus; shielded control cable LiYCY and RS-485/Modbus pairs for industrial and building-automation signalling.
Coaxial cable
RG6 and RG59 still carry satellite, terrestrial TV and some CCTV video feeds where a coax-based system is already in place or specified.
Fiber optic
Single- or multi-mode fiber with SC/LC connectors handles the bandwidth and distances that copper data cable can't — backbone runs, long risers, and EMI-heavy plant rooms.
Fire-rated and LSZH cable
Required in specific building categories and regulatory situations — escape routes, public buildings, cable runs through fire compartments — always check your project's actual requirements rather than assuming.

What cross-section should I use for a circuit?
There's no universal answer — the correct cross-section depends on installation method, ambient temperature, insulation, cable bundling and your national wiring regulations. The common installation tiers (1.5/2.5/4/6/10 mm²) are a starting point, not a lookup table; always check the datasheet and confirm with a certified electrician.
Solid or stranded conductors — which do I need?
Solid conductors terminate well in screw and WAGO-style terminals and suit fixed installation in walls and conduit. Stranded (litz) conductors flex without work-hardening and fatiguing, so they belong anywhere the cable moves — mobile equipment, cable chains, patch leads.
Do I need shielded data cable, or is UTP enough?
UTP is fine for straightforward runs kept away from power cabling, motors and frequency drives. FTP, STP or shielded LiYCY earn their keep in noisier environments or on longer runs — but the shield only helps if it's correctly grounded, usually at one end, per the system manufacturer's instructions; done wrong, it can make interference worse.
Why keep power and data cabling separate?
Running power and low-voltage/data cable together invites electromagnetic interference on the data side and makes future changes harder. Separate channels or adequate physical separation is the baseline principle — conduit fill and bend radius should still follow the specific cable manufacturer's guidance and local regulations.
When is fire-rated or LSZH cable actually required?
It depends on your building category and local regulations — typical triggers are escape routes, public buildings, and cable runs through fire compartments. Don't assume standard cable is fine or that fire-rated cable is always required; check your project's specific rules.
