Define goals and scenarios

We start with what the home should actually do, room by room and function by function: lighting scenes, room-by-room climate control, security, automated blinds, energy monitoring. Scenarios come before any product list.

Decide wired, wireless or hybrid

Wired bus systems like KNX or Loxone and wireless ecosystems such as Zigbee, Z-Wave or Wi-Fi are different tools with real tradeoffs — reliability and cabling effort versus installation disruption. New-build, renovation or retrofit changes the right answer, and a hybrid backbone-plus-wireless approach is often pragmatic.

Choose an ecosystem and map the topology

Selecting a hub or controller — an open platform like Home Assistant or a single-vendor system — is a separate decision from wiring. We plan on paper where hubs, gateways and controllers sit and what role each device family plays, reviewed alongside the electrical design.

Phase the rollout and future-proof

Budget and scope are planned in tiers as concepts, not fixed figures, coordinated with spare conduits, a pulled neutral at switch positions and an honest look at vendor lock-in — including where Matter/Thread genuinely helps today.

Design before you buy

Every decision below is made and documented before a single device is purchased, so the system fits real routines instead of a shopping list.

Scenarios before shopping

Lighting scenes, climate schedules, security, shading and energy management are defined per room and function first — hardware is chosen to fit those needs, not the other way round.

Wired vs wireless: tradeoffs, not a hierarchy

Neither approach is universally better. We weigh reliability, cabling effort, disruption and budget for a new build, renovation or retrofit, and design a hybrid where that is the pragmatic answer.

Ecosystem is a separate decision

Open platforms like Home Assistant and single-vendor controllers such as a KNX-native system or Loxone Miniserver both have a place. The right choice depends on how much the household wants to self-manage.

Coordinated with the electrical design

Spare conduits for bus/low-voltage cabling, a neutral pulled to switch positions, and consumer-unit layout are agreed with the electrician early — cheap on paper, expensive once walls are closed.

Future-proofing without over-engineering

We leave reasonable headroom and document the plan honestly, including vendor lock-in risk. Matter/Thread is still maturing — it helps cross-brand compatibility for some devices but does not replace a careful ecosystem choice.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is a wired system like KNX always better than wireless?

No — it depends on the project. Wired systems offer strong long-term reliability but need cabling planned in advance, which is far cheaper in new-build or full renovation than in a finished home. Wireless installs with less disruption but depends on radio coverage, batteries and, for some ecosystems, a hub. Many projects land on a hybrid.

Can we start with wireless devices now and add a wired backbone later?

Often yes, and it is a common phased approach — but it should still be planned on paper first, including leaving spare conduits during any wall work, so a later wired backbone is not a disruptive retrofit.

Should we use Home Assistant or a vendor's own hub?

Both are valid; the decision is separate from wired-vs-wireless. An open platform like Home Assistant gives flexibility across brands at the cost of more setup involvement, while a single-vendor controller can be simpler to support but ties the project to that vendor's roadmap.

Does Matter/Thread mean we no longer need to choose an ecosystem carefully?

Not yet. Matter/Thread is a genuinely useful, still-maturing interoperability standard that improves cross-brand compatibility for some device classes, but it does not replace a deliberate ecosystem and hub decision for every function.

How many devices or how much budget do we need?

That depends on home size, goals and the chosen ecosystem, so we do not quote fixed figures here. We plan the rollout in concept tiers — core safety and a couple of comfort scenarios first, expanding from there — and set real numbers with you and your supplier.
