Cable Labelling Standards for KNX Panels: IEC 60445, Colour Codes, and Panduit Labellers

IEC 60445 and HD 308 S2 colour code requirements for KNX panel wiring — phase, neutral, earth, 24VDC, and KNX TP. Panduit MP200 and Brady M611 printer configuration for cable markers, terminal labels, and DIN module identification.

IEC 60445 and HD 308 S2 Colour Codes

European standard IEC 60445 (adopted as HD 308 S2 in the EU) mandates conductor identification in electrical panels. Applied to KNX panels:

ConductorColourNotes
Phase L1BrownOr black in older UK installations
Phase L2Black
Phase L3Grey
Neutral NBlue (light blue, RAL 5015)
Protective Earth PEGreen/yellow bicolourNever any other colour — mandatory IEC 60445
24VDC positiveRed or orangeSELV control circuit
24VDC negative / 0VBlueUse sleeve label or separate duct to distinguish from AC neutral
KNX TP bus (YCYM 2x0.8mm2)Red sheath; red inner (+), black inner (−)Red to positive bus (+), black to negative (−). Do not reverse polarity.
DALI (2-wire, 16VDC)Grey sleeve labelled DALIDALI is polarity-insensitive — no IEC polarity requirement
Signal / dry-contact wiresWhite or yellow, with circuit ID sleeveMotion sensor, pushbutton, window contact

Cable Marker Types and Application

Heat-shrink markers (Panduit HSTT or TE Raychem): heat-shrink tube printed with circuit identifier, applied before pulling cable. Best for multi-core cables and cables already terminated.

Push-on plastic flag markers (Phoenix Contact ZB 3 series): clip onto DIN terminals, printed on strip with terminal label printer. Fastest method for terminal blocks.

Self-laminating cable markers (Brady M611 with B-595 label): print circuit ID, wrap around cable. Clear laminate protects text from abrasion and oil. Use on panel-to-field cables. Heat-shrink is preferred for in-duct wiring.

Cable duct label (Panduit MP200 with T100X025VPY perforated stock):applied to cable duct cover for zone and circuit identification.

Labelling Scheme for KNX Panels

Convention for a residential KNX panel serving one villa:

Label format conventions

MCB labels: L[phase][number]-[circuit description]
  Examples: L1-01 Lights GF Left
                  L2-03 Sockets Kitchen

KNX actuators: [type]-[number] [KNX individual address]
  Examples: MDT-AKK-01 1.1.5
                  MDT-JRM-01 1.1.8

Cable ID: [panel-code]/[room-code]/[circuit-number]
  Example: MDB/LR/07
= Main Distribution Board / Living Room / circuit 07

Critical rule — both ends of every cable get the same label. A cable labelled only at the source end creates troubleshooting delays during commissioning. Label source and destination before pulling the cable through conduit or duct.

Panduit MP200 Printer Setup

Panduit MP200 (thermal transfer, Ethernet + USB, supports ABCDE+ label cartridges): install on the programming laptop. Software: PANDUIT ID Manager for label templates.

Step 1: select label type B-422 (white polyester, 12.7mm height, 38.1mm minimum length) for cable markers. Step 2: create template with circuit ID field, auto-increment by circuit number. Step 3: print all MCB labels, actuator labels, and cable markers for the panel before assembly begins — pre-printed labels save significant time on site.

Brady M611 alternative: portable USB printer for field labelling. Brady Workstation software. Labels: M611-10-732 (white polyester 12.7mm x 50mm). Durable at 105 degrees C — suitable for cables near MCBs.

Dymo LabelWriter 550 (thermal, not thermal transfer): suitable only for room-temperature labels (terminal labels, DIN module labels). Not suitable for cables near heat sources above 60 degrees C — avoid use in the high-voltage zone.

Example Terminal Block Labels

For a KNX panel Zone B terminal strip (24VDC distribution):

Zone B terminal and KNX bus labelling

24VDC distribution terminals (Phoenix ZB 3 push-on labels):
Terminal 1: 24V+ (PSU positive in)
Terminal 2: 24V- (PSU negative in)
Terminal 3: OUT+ (24VDC+ fused out to actuator rail)
  Terminal 4: OUT- (24VDC- common)

KNX bus distribution terminals (WAGO 281 or Phoenix ST 2.5):
  Terminal +KNX (red label)
  Terminal -KNX (black label)

Panel door internal label — KNX bus polarity reminder:
  +KNX (red conductor) -> terminal A(+)
-KNX (black conductor) -> terminal B(-)
(bus coupler terminal designations vary by manufacturer)

Need a professionally labelled KNX panel built to spec?

We apply IEC 60445 colour codes, print all cable markers and terminal labels before assembly, and deliver KNX panels with both-ends cable identification — reducing commissioning time on your site.
